Zika Virus Detected In Mumbai: How To Avoid The Risk? Is It Deadly?
In a recent development that has raised concerns among residents and health authorities, the Zika virus has been detected in Mumbai. The National Institute of Virology confirmed that a 79-year-old Chembur man had been infected with the Zika virus and has recovered fully, PTI reported quoting Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
BMC has said in a press release that the disease is self-limiting and that about 80% of the people who are infected are symptom-free [1].

From 19 July, the individual reported fever, stuffy nose, and cough symptoms, and remained in the hospital until 2 August.
A report also states that the patient had Angioplasty 20 years ago. He also suffers from diabetes, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and thalassemia minor.
What Is The Zika Virus?
The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne illness primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. This virus gained international attention a few years ago due to its association with birth defects in babies born to infected mothers.
However, the virus can also cause symptoms in adults, ranging from mild to severe.
What Are The Symptoms of Zika Virus?
Common symptoms of Zika virus infection include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).
These symptoms are usually mild and can last for several days to a week. In some cases, individuals may not even show any symptoms, making it challenging to detect the virus.
How Do Zika Virus Spread?
Apart from mosquito bites, Zika virus can also be transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person, from mother to child during pregnancy, and through blood transfusions.
Preventing mosquito bites and practising safe sex are crucial steps in minimising the risk of transmission.

How To Protect Yourself from Zika?
- Use mosquito repellents: Apply EPA-approved mosquito repellents on exposed skin to prevent mosquito bites.
- Wear protective clothing: Long-sleeved shirts and pants can provide an additional barrier against mosquito bites.
- Eliminate breeding sites: Regularly empty containers holding stagnant water, as mosquitoes breed in such areas.
- Stay indoors: If possible, stay indoors during peak mosquito activity times, usually dawn and dusk.
- Travel precautions: If you're planning to travel to areas where the Zika virus is prevalent, it's important to be informed about the current situation. Check travel advisories and take extra precautions to prevent mosquito bites.
Pregnancy And Zika Virus
Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should take extra care to prevent Zika virus infection. The virus has been linked to birth defects such as microcephaly, which can lead to serious developmental issues in babies.
Is Zika Virus Deadly?
For the majority of individuals, Zika virus infection is not life-threatening, and symptoms are mild. However, the virus's potential to cause birth defects and its association with Guillain-Barré syndrome (a rare neurological disorder) highlight the importance of prevention.

On A Final Note...
If you suspect that you might have contracted the Zika virus, seek medical attention immediately. Your healthcare provider can recommend appropriate tests and provide guidance on managing symptoms.
