World ORS Day 2025: Think ORS Is Only For Diarrhoea? Here's What Most Parents Don't Know
If you're a parent, chances are you've stashed a sachet of ORS somewhere in your first-aid box-just in case your child gets diarrhoea. But what if we told you that limiting ORS to just diarrhoea could put your child's health at risk?
Every year, thousands of children across India suffer from preventable dehydration-not just from loose motions, but from common illnesses like fever, vomiting, and even heat exhaustion. ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) is one of the most affordable, science-backed tools we have to fight this silent danger. And yet, so many parents don't know when or how else to use it.

On World ORS Day, which is observed on 29 July, check out these five situations where ORS could quietly save the day-and possibly a life.
1. Vomiting Can Dehydrate Kids Too, ORS Can Replenish What's Lost
Most parents wait for diarrhoea to pull out the ORS sachet. But vomiting can be just as dangerous, especially in small children. After repeated bouts of vomiting due to food poisoning, stomach infections, or viral illnesses, the body rapidly loses fluids and electrolytes.
ORS provides the right balance of salts, glucose, and water that helps the intestines absorb nutrients more efficiently-even when your child refuses to eat or drink much. Giving small sips every 10-15 minutes can make a noticeable difference in energy and recovery.

Some children experience digestive upset or mild dehydration after taking antibiotics or vaccinations. These can trigger nausea, minor diarrhoea, or low appetite, which in turn leads to reduced fluid intake.
ORS works as a gentle gut support here-it's not just about rehydration, but also about restoring the body's salt and sugar balance that affects everything from mood to immunity. Offering ORS for a day or two after a medicine-heavy phase can help your child bounce back faster.
