World AIDS Day: 3 Not So Common Ways HIV Can Spread from Person to Person
Every year, 1 December marks the commemoration of the united fight against HIV and AIDS. 'World AIDS Day' has been raising awareness of the epidemic that kills at least 1 million people every year, since 1988.
The idea behind the international observance is to expunge the outmoded stigma and to show solidarity to the HIV affected. AIDS and HIV infections are one of the biggest problems of the current world, despite the establishment of enhanced and upgraded preventive measures.

The theme of World AIDS Day 2023 is 'Let communities lead,' to highlight the impact communities have had in shaping the HIV response.
As World AIDS Day approaches, you should be aware of HIV transmission beyond the familiar routes. While many are aware of the primary means of contracting the virus, there are lesser-known causes of HIV/AIDS that demand attention.
1. Oral Sex
When it comes to HIV transmission, oral sex is frequently underestimated. While the risk is generally lower than with vaginal or anal intercourse, it's not non-existent. The virus can be present in the genital and rectal fluids, making unprotected oral sex a potential avenue for transmission. To stay safe, consider using barriers like dental dams or condoms during oral encounters.
Did you know? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk of HIV transmission through oral sex is lower than through vaginal or anal sex. However, it's not zero.

2. Being Bitten By Someone With HIV
It might sound like a scene from a horror movie, but being bitten by someone with HIV can pose a risk. Though the likelihood is low, especially in comparison to other modes of transmission, the virus can be present in saliva, and an open wound on the bitten person could provide an entry point. While rare, it's a reminder to treat any bite seriously, regardless of the circumstances.
Did you know? A study published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes found that while the risk of HIV transmission through biting is low, it's not negligible, especially if there's blood involved.

3. Sharing Personal Care Items
In the realm of less-discussed transmission routes, sharing personal care items comes into focus. Items like razors or toothbrushes can carry traces of blood, potentially carrying the virus from one person to another. It's a subtle reminder to exercise caution in seemingly innocent daily activities.
Did you know? The Journal of the International AIDS Society reports that sharing personal care items can theoretically transmit HIV, though it's a less common route.

On A Final Note...
On World AIDS Day, one must be aware of how HIV spreads. While we often talk about the common ways like unprotected sex or sharing needles, it's essential to be aware of less common ways to protect ourselves and others.
Disclaimer: The risk of HIV transmission through the mentioned routes is relatively low compared to more common methods like unprotected sex. This information aims to increase awareness rather than instill fear. Always practice safe behaviors and consult healthcare professionals for expert advice.
