Will You Lose Wealth If You Shake Your Legs? Busting The Myth!
The act of shaking the legs in India is not just an expression of nervousness - as our elders used to say, it drives away wealth. If you shake your legs, prosperity is supposed to flow away from you. Does this hold true?
How true can that be, right? We just have to look at the fact behind this one - if there is one at all.

Read on.
Will You Lose Your Wealth If You Shake Your Legs?
There is a possibility that the superstition originated from the old belief that shaking your leg indicates idleness. Most of the world sees it as irritating, especially in Asia. The continuous dangling and shackling of one's leg is akin to slurping a cup of chai while enjoying it.
It is understandable that slurping is an integral part of the whole chai experience, but it is irritating. You can't blame us for not really enjoying your chai experience as it is a real problem, called Misophonia [1].
Misophonia is a real disorder, it affects many people more than we realise, and it seriously impairs functioning, socialising, and ultimately mental health. Misophonia usually manifests between the ages of 12 and 16, and it is likely to affect many people [2].
Anyway, let's not sidetrack.
Why is it said that you lose your wealth if you shake your legs? Basically, it is due to sitting idle - and from the scientific and health perspective, sitting idle is detrimental to your health.
Sitting is the new smoking - haven't you heard? Keep up!

Side Effects Of Sitting Idle
Studies indicate that sitting for long periods of time can lead to a number of health problems. Sitting for long periods of time is less energy-intensive than standing or moving [3].
In addition to obesity, metabolic syndrome includes an array of conditions, such as elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, excess body fat around the waist, and elevated cholesterol levels [4].
A prolonged period of sitting and too much sitting overall appear to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality [5].
Is Shaking Your Legs Bad For Your Health?
Some studies have indicated that shaking your legs can have negative health effects. The following are some of these effects:
- While seated, moving the legs can hurt the joints, especially for people with bone-related issues such as osteoporosis [6].
- If you shake your legs excessively, the nerves in your legs may experience an opposite impact and you may experience foot pain as a result [7].
- Additionally, frequent shaking of the legs while being suspended, for example, while sitting in a chair, may increase the risk of heart disease [8].

On A Final Note...
As we have said before, shaking your legs will not cause you to lose your wealth, but it may cause you some unwanted health issues in the long run.
In general, research suggests that less sitting and more movement are associated with better health. You might start by standing rather than sitting whenever possible.
