10 Foods To Avoid If You Are On Dialysis
Listed here are a few foods that patients undergoing dialysis need to avoid. Check them out.
Kidneys act as a filter in our body, helping to remove the toxic materials through urination. But when the kidney start to dysfunction, dialysis comes to play.
This is a treatment which almost every diabetic patient undergoes. With the help of dialysis, toxins are removed from the body artificially.
Diabetes has taken a toll on world health with every other individual falling prey to it, either genetically or all of a sudden.
Excessive tension and stress are often presumed to be its main cause. However, once a person has developed diabetes, it is important to consult a diabetologist and undergo proper medication along with physical exercise.

This will help to keep a check on the person's blood sugar level. But if diabetes is not checked in time it can lead to other deadly impairments like heart attack, blindness, dysfunctioning of organs with kidney failure being the common one.
So, when your kidney starts to malfunction, dialysis is the only option. But a dialysis patient has to follow a strict dietary chart if he/she wishes to stay fit.
Below are some of the foods that a dialysis patient should avoid or consume as directed.

1. Salt/Sodium:
Weight gain between dialysis sessions can have a detrimental effect on your treatment. So it is advised to consume less salty food and if possible avoid the intake of sodium which will further help to reduce your blood pressure level. Instead of salt you can use other seasonings like herbs or spices but avoid having salt substitutes made of potassium.

2. Meat/Protein:
Protein is recommended for dialysis patients at least about 8-10 ounce daily. Protein-rich food such as fish, meat and egg should be consumed daily, but it is important to keep a check on the quantity as well. Excess of protein foods can have other effects as well. A small sized fish or a half chicken breast is what you can have.

3. Cereals:
Carbohydrates are a major factor for increasing the blood sugar level in the body. Diabetic patients require 6-10 serving of grains, cereals or bread. But avoid whole grain or high-fibre foods such as whole wheat bread, bran cereal and brown rice as these are rich in phosphorous. Limiting this food will help keep a check on your bones and blood vessels.

4. Dairy Products:
Limit the intake of dairy products such as milk, yogurt or cheese. Although this group of food is required by a diabetic patient, only in quantity like half cup milk or yogurt or 1 ounce of cheese. Avoid having skim milk, low-fat milk, etc. as they contain phosphorous which is not good for a dialysis patient.

5. Fruits/Juice:
Avoid fruits which have high potassium content like kiwis, nectarines, prunes, banana and melons. Instead opt for having apples, berries, cherries, grapes, plums or pineapple as directed by the doctor.

6. Drinks:
Hard drinks are a strict no when a person is undergoing dialysis. This will escalate your blood sugar level in the body, and the effects can be fatal. Instead try having apple cider, grape juice or lemonade.

7. Vegetables/Salad
All veggies contain some amount of potassium, but it is up to you how much quantity you intake. 2-3 servings of low potassium-riched vegetables are a requirement during dialysis. Have leafy green vegetables like broccoli, cucumber, lettuce, etc. Avoid having vegetables that are grown under the soil like potato, carrot, beet, etc.

8. Dessert:
A diabetic patient, especially the one undergoing dialysis should avoid having desserts. He/she can, however, opt for sugar-free sweets which are now available easily in the market.

9. Canned Food:
Canned food contains a high level of sodium which can lead to fluid retention during dialysis. So it is best recommended to avoid such food.

10. Nuts & Seeds:
This category of food is a rich source of potassium and phosphorous. So it is advised to avoid the intake of peanut butter, dried peas, beans, etc. when undergoing dialysis treatment.
Dialysis is a painful procedure, and even doctors limit your intake of water in a day. So, before such a situation arises, it is best to keep a check on your health at an early stage.
