Main Causes Of Vaginal Odour
All vaginas have a distinct odour and it is described as a little musky. However, there are certain cases when this normal odour changes and there are various reasons for it, indicating that there are health issues down there.

Bacterial vaginosis is one such reason. All vaginas have naturally growing bacterias. It is when this bacteria increases in amount or there is an overgrowth, there is soreness, discharge and itching. This is called bacterial vaginosis. There is usually a fishy smell and this is curable with the help of antibiotics.

Vaginal odour can also result from yeast infection. It happens as a result of a fungal infection and there is a thick white discharge from the vagina. However, the odour is not that strong and it smells like bread or yeast. This fungal infection is caused by an overgrowth of the yeast called Candida.
This type of infection is accompanied by redness, burning and pain during sexual intercourse and urination. Antifungal medicines are used to treat this kind of infection. Antibiotics are not required to treat this kind of infection. Medicines to treat yeast infection are available over the counter.

Vaginal odour can also be caused by sexually transmitted diseases, mostly by chlamydia and gonorrhoea. These diseases are easily treated but if not treated on time can give rise to serious ailments. The symptoms of these diseases are pain during urination, an unpleasant odour and a puss-like discharge.
Vaginal odour can also be caused by pelvic inflammatory disease. When the sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and gonorrhoea go untreated, it can result in pelvic inflammatory disease. There is an infection in the female reproductive organs which can cause an odour, pain during sexual intercourse and pelvic or abdominal pain.

Pelvic inflammatory disease cannot be diagnosed easily. It only comes to the forefront when you have pain in the abdomen area or find it difficult to get pregnant. When detected, it can be treated with antibiotics.
