Sleeping Pills: Good Or Bad?
Insomnia or sleeping disorders are treated by using sleeping pills. Many physicians prescribe patients with appropriate sleeping pills dose which would not be harmful for the patient. Sleeping pills for the elderly people are commonly prescribed medicines. But, sleeping pills for elderly are just short term relief providers.
Sleeping pills for elderly act like hypnotics and induce sleep or maintain sleep. These pills also act as anti depressant and anxiety controller. Sleeping pills for elderly should be taken only as instructions by the doctors.

Sleeping pills can have many side effects like drowsiness, absent mindedness, heartburn, constipation, gas, headache, etc. An overdose of sleeping pills may cause the patient to go in coma, suffer a seizure or even a fatal heart attack.
Sleeping Pills for elderly people can also be allergic and cause nausea, vomiting, chest pain, heart pain, etc. Therefore, sleeping pills are not quite good for health. They should not be taken regularly as it may hamper the health and even prove addictive. We have already discussed the side effects and ill effects of sleeping pills. Now, we shall discuss some alternatives to sleeping pills for elderly.
Meditation Therapy - Sleeping disorders can be treated by using meditation techniques. Meditation helps to relax the mind and soul. It helps to clear the sub conscious and helps to get a relaxed sleep without the aid of a sleeping pill. Meditation is an excellent alternative to sleeping pills for the elderly. Follow a meditation routine some time before going to sleep.A relaxed mind is sure to give you a good night sleep.
Sex - As much as it sounds weird, sex does help in relaxing your mind. Sex is a good remedy for people suffering with sleeping disorders. The orgasm and pleasure helps to induce sleep in many. Try this alternative for sleeping pills which sure has only fun and no side effects. Sex is a medicine for many other ailments like migraine and sinus. Therefore, there is no harm in trying it as a sleep inducer.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - This therapy is an excellent alternative for sleeping pills. The therapy focuses on reducing the 'bad thoughts' that prevent a patient from sleeping. The therapy changes the routine you follow before sleeping. The routine is made better by introducing calm music, a pleasant view or reading a good book. According to this therapy, anything pleasant that can stop the bad feelings can be done to have a good sleep.
Herbal Pills - There are many ayurvedic and herbal ills available in the market which help in inducing sleep without any side effects. The pills may contain herbs like Valerie, lemon ball, lavender, etc. These pills has sedative properties and can be used to induce sleep naturally. Take care of allergies before using any herbs.
Exercise and Relaxation - People who exercise regularly in the day are said to have a good sleep in the night. Therefore, exercising is a good alternative to sleeping pills for elderly. Also, you may use relaxation methods like rhythmic breathing, deep breathing, etc to have a good night sleep. These are a few alternatives to sleeping pills. Regular intake of sleeping pills is not good.
