Although, garlic is universally a vegetarian food, many Hindus like Jains do not eat it. In the past, widows were forbidden from eating garlic because it 'warms' the body. The scientific reason behind this is that garlic contains allicin that increases blood circulation and produces heat in the body. Thus garlic is an aphrodisiac that you must have in order to turn the heat on in your love life. Having it raw makes your mouth stink but that is the healthiest way to consume this spice.
