Are You Safe With Western Diet?

Everything that is western may not always be good but still we blindly follow the western lifestyle if not the culture. Specially the younger generation has adapted their thought process, dressing style, trends and also diet. Western diet which does not take time, is easy to cook and ready to eat, has become the easy solution to students and working professionals. The ready to eat, quick to cook food is the diet which is being adapted by the Indian society. Recent studies have proved several western diet problems.

Western Diet problems -

1.Processed Food – The first problem of Western diet is that they are mostly processed and uses a lot of processed flour and carbohydrates. The processed flour and carbohydrates are very low in nutrient value. The first effect of processed food is that is hinders the digestive system of the body. These food take a lot of time to get digested, thus, leading to digestive problems and all a lot of time it taken for the little nutrients of the product to be absorbed by the body. In the whole process the body goes through a lot of stress. You might end up eating the food quick but your body takes longer time to digest it.

2.Chemicals and Preservatives – Tinned food, canned food and juices which have longer shelf life are very high on preservatives, giving rise to the second western diet problem. Parabens is one of the constantly found in these products. Read effects of parabens here. Processed food have bad calories, which increases the concentration of bad fat in the body. One of the causes of increase in the number of skin cancer, breast cancer and other disorders is due to the constant intake of chemicals and preservatives.

3.High Calorie Intake – The third most biggest problem of western diet is the high calorie concentration in their food. Their diet is all about meat, fried food and refined grains. All of which are sources to heighten cholesterol, triglyceride and calories. Their diet uses a lot of butter, bread and flour. Soda is an inevitable part of their meal. High intake of milk all adds on to the cholesterol concentration. The result is obesity, heart diseases and Type 2 Diabetes. Obesity is one of the growing problems of the west.

4.Kidney Diseases – The fourth and one of the most dangerous problems is the diet's effect on kidney. This diet effect on Kidney has been proved by a study by the American Journal of Kidney. The study judged kidney by two methods - estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which measures how well the kidney filters blood; and the presence of microalbuminuria, a urinary protein that is a marker of vascular disease and inflammation. Women who took western diet were marked with increased level of albuminuria and increased risk of eGFR.

Thus, rather than following the diet of the west blindly, it's better to stick to our Indian cuisine.
