A new study has revealed that the modern lifestyles might actually prevent tooth decay. The scientific evidences from the past 150 years have shown that the effects of fluoride toothpaste, good oral hygiene and health education, might override the effects of food alone on tooth decay.

It is not good enough to just watch what we eat, as other factors are also important, believes professor Monty Duggal, an author of the review. "Fluoride toothpaste changes the effect that some foods have on the teeth, as do other good oral hygiene practices'.

"Future research should investigate a number of lifestyle factors together with different foods that might affect tooth decay. Times have changed and with that, the foods we eat, and how we care for our teeth," Duggal said.

The review researched evidence for the belief that sugar alone causes tooth decay. It was concluded that out of the 31 studies, no major link was found between sugar consumed and dental caries, but it was the frequency of the sugar consumption that mattered.

Thanks to the dental health education, most people now realize that brushing your teeth twice, especially before going to bed is important to protect against tooth decay.
