Braces are worn to rectify malocclusions or misalignment of teeth like crooked teeth, under bites, overbites, cross bites, open bites or other teeth and jaw flaws. They can be worn on the upper or lower level of the teeth or on both with regards to the requirement. Force is applied on the teeth by the arch wire of the braces to rectify protruding teeth or jaw flaws giving in to bone remodeling. There are different types of braces to set right misaligned teeth.

After the treatment period the teeth has to be exposed to retainers or pre-finishers to keep the corrected alignment intact for a certain period of time. Proper oral hygiene like brushing and flossing has to be adopted to keep the braces clean. Sticky and hard foods are to be avoided. It is also important for sports people to wear mouth guards to prevent the braces form damage.
Braces have also become a fashion statement now among the teens.
