What Led To The Heart Failure Predictor
Boldsky started off the conversation, trying to know what must have led to such an idea. Dr. Ray explained that heart failure is a condition that differs significantly from other diseases like heart attacks, as it lacks specific quantitative diagnostic criteria and relies primarily on clinical assessment. Which leads to many complexities. For one, there are a substantial number of asymptomatic patients-individuals who exhibit no early symptoms of the disease and then when symptoms do manifest, they often overlap and can be confusing, particularly in patients with coexisting conditions such as high blood pressure or high blood sugar. That's why in Dr Abhijit's exact words, "...So I always wanted to have a screening channel to identify the cases of heart failure early on".
What Is The Heart Failure Predictor
According to Dr Abhijit Ray, the concept involves using a 12-lead ECG, wristwatch ECG, or any handheld ECG device to gather patient data, which is then processed through an algorithm based on a patented formula. This formula harnesses AI technology to predict a patient's risk of developing heart failure within the next three months.
What Are The Causes Of Heart Failure
When Boldsky got inquisitive on the causes of heart failure, the doctor explained, "Heart failure has a high list of causes - high blood pressure, alcoholism, high blood sugar, hypothyroidism then there are a group of people who have a heart attack and then their heart stops working leading to heart failure. Heart failure is the inability of the heart's pumping action".
Rise of Heart Failure in India
When Boldsky enquired about the rising concern of heart failure in India, Dr. Abhijit states that over the past few decades, there has been a noticeable rise in heart failure cases, with a concerning trend towards younger patients. The age threshold has steadily decreased, and today, many individuals under 40 have been coming under the symptoms of heart failure.
How Can AI Help Us Live Healthier Lives
Dr Abhijit asserts that AI-driven heart failure prediction is a powerful example of how artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare. According to him, traditionally doctors relied solely on clinical knowledge and available diagnostic tools to assess patient conditions, however, with AI, one can predict a person's likelihood of developing certain diseases in the future, enabling more proactive care. This capability not only enhances diagnostic accuracy but also helps improve the patient's overall condition by enabling earlier and more personalized interventions.

"If a patient has any of the known causes of heart failure, they should keep those in control. They should not let them get out of control. Exercise, lots of water and rest are very important for preventing heart failure." reminds and cautions Dr Ray when Boldsky asked him if he had anything special to add, emphasizing the dire need to take care of our heart health.
