We spoke to Anshu Thakur, Dietitian and Nutritionist, Fast&Up India, who shared tips to reverse post-wedding weight gain.

During the wedding season, people often consume far more calories than they realise. Multiple functions, repeated servings, and rich foods like sweets, fried snacks, gravies, and mocktails add up quickly.

"Even when someone believes they are eating 'in moderation,' the overall calorie count can easily exceed daily requirements, leading to weight gain within a few weeks. Alongside overeating, sleep becomes highly compromised," said Thakur.

Sleep Disruption Alters Hunger Hormones

"Late nights and irregular schedules disrupt the body's circadian rhythm, increasing ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates hunger, and decreasing leptin, which signals fullness. This imbalance often leads to stronger cravings the next day and a tendency to overeat," added Thakur.

Dehydration and Water Retention Cause Bloating

Another source of weight gain post-wedding is dehydration. Due to extensive travel and consumption of high amounts of sodium and sweets, the body retains water. This causes ballooning of the face, stomach, and legs as water is being retained inside the body.

Irregular Meals Slow Down Metabolism

"Irregular eating times also slow down metabolism because people tend to eat at odd times, skip eating at times when they are busy, or go for prolonged periods without eating, which increases fat accumulation in their bodies," explained Thakur.

In addition, consuming high amounts of sugar during wedding seasons triggers high insulin levels in the body. As insulin is a storage hormone, having high insulin levels in the body results in the accumulation of fat, especially in the abdominal region.

Resetting the Body After Wedding Season

Reversing post-wedding season weight gain requires returning to simple, structured, and nourishing habits.

  • Starting the day with warm water, lemon water, or jeera water rehydrates the body and reduces water retention.
  • Supporting this with a natural 12-13-hour overnight fast improves insulin sensitivity and supports fat metabolism.
  • Breakfast should be protein-rich to stabilise blood sugar and curb cravings.
  • Options like moong dal chilla, vegetable upma, idli with sambar, or paneer-stuffed roti provide satiety without overwhelming the stomach.

Hydration and Electrolyte Balance Matter

"Hydration remains crucial in the days following wedding celebrations. Drinking enough water, along with low-sugar effervescent electrolyte supplements, supports better hydration and absorption. Ensuring all five essential electrolytes are included helps restore balance after excess salt, sugar, and late nights," advised Thakur.

Build Balanced Meals, Not Restrictive Diets

A balanced meal structure also helps regain control over weight. "Following a plate composition of half vegetables, one-third protein, and a small portion of whole grains ensures calorie intake naturally reduces without feeling restrictive. Taking a short break from sugar, even for 7-10 days, allows taste buds and hormones to reset, greatly reducing cravings and helping people feel lighter," emphasised Thakur.

Gentle Movement Helps Restart Metabolism

Physical activity can help the body reset after the festive season when approached gently and consistently. Activities like taking short walks, strength training, stretching, as well as striving to achieve 8,000-9,000 steps a day, aid in boosting metabolism without tiring the body. Sleeping is largely underrated, but it has great significance in achieving maximum weight loss.

Sleep Is a Non-Negotiable for Weight Loss

Sleeping for seven to eight hours during the night helps control the appetite hormones in the body and overcome the intake of higher calories. Timing is more important than accuracy; eating 80% pure food and the remaining 20% without restrictions prevents overeating.
