Diabetes: Replacing Soda With These Drinks Can Lower Type 2 Diabetes Risks
Diabetes is a chronic disease that is becoming increasingly common in India. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India has the second highest number of diabetes cases in the world, with an estimated 69.2 million people in the country suffering from the condition - placing India as one of the most affected countries in the world when it comes to diabetes [1].

The primary cause of diabetes in India is lifestyle-related, with an increasing number of people living in urban areas and leading sedentary lifestyles. Poor dietary habits, including the consumption of high-fat, high-sugar, and high-calorie foods, are also contributing to the diabetes epidemic [2].
Type 2 Diabetes In India
It is to be noted that type 2 diabetes is a serious health issue facing India today. It is estimated that there are over 69 million people in India living with diabetes, with the majority of these cases being type 2 diabetes [3].
While it can be managed with lifestyle changes, such as proper diet and exercise, there are still risks associated with this condition.
Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease
The most serious risk associated with type 2 diabetes is cardiovascular disease. People with diabetes have a higher risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases than those without diabetes.
It is important for individuals with type 2 diabetes to work with their healthcare provider to manage their blood sugar levels, as well as their cholesterol and blood pressure, to reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease [4].
According to a recent study, it has been reported that drinking water, coffee, or tea instead of soda/sugary drinks could prolong life and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in adults with type 2 diabetes [5].
Let's take a deeper look at the findings here.

Soda, Water, Tea Or Coffee For Diabetes?
It was found that people who regularly consumed sugar-sweetened beverages had a 20% greater risk of death from any cause than those who consumed the fewest types of these beverages.
It was found that those who consumed the most sugary drinks had a 25% higher risk of cardiovascular disease and a 29% higher risk of cardiovascular disease-related death.
The researchers found that individuals who consumed the most sugary drinks consumed more than one sugary beverage daily, while those who consumed the least consumed less than one serving per month.
Why is soda bad for diabetics?
Sugary drinks containing fructose or high fructose corn syrup and glucose rapidly elevate blood sugar levels and cause insulin levels to rise rapidly. In turn, this will negatively affect diabetic control, worsen fatty liver disease, increase vascular inflammation, and increase the risk of cardiovascular and other diseases directly associated with diabetes [6][7].
Why are tea, coffee and water the better option for diabetics?
Additionally, researchers reported that certain drinks such as coffee, tea, and water have positive associations with weight loss.
It was found that individuals who consumed up to six drinks of coffee, tea, or water daily had a 26%, 21%, and 23% lower risk of death during the study period, respectively. The mortality rate of people who consumed high amounts of low-fat milk was also 12% lower. The consumption of coffee and low-fat milk was also associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease of 18% and 12%, respectively [8].

What about artificial sweeteners for diabetics?
There was a reduced mortality rate associated with artificially sweetened beverages as well, but to a lesser degree - just 4% lower in total. The consumption of diet drinks, many of which are artificially sweetened, has also been associated with heart conditions, metabolic issues, and liver issues, according to previous research [9].
Additionally, some artificial sweeteners have been associated with an increased risk of cancer.
On A Final Note...
If in doubt, choose non-sweet beverages such as coffee, water, tea, or something else instead of sweet beverages. In diabetes, diluting the body's volume with most fluids may be beneficial as it helps the body eliminate excess sugar from the body. So stick to water, coffee or tea!
