People With 'Big Five' Traits Are Happier: What Are These Traits? Do You Have It?
We are aware that there are certain things that make someone happy - it could be a person, a food item, or an event - it varies from person to person. However, as experts point out, there are certain traits or characteristics that make a person, a happy person.
The belief that certain personality types are closely associated with finding satisfaction in life has been held by researchers for some time.

In a recent study, researchers explore whether these associations can be attributed to specific life phases or whether they are present at all ages.
What Makes A Person Happy?
A study has shown that certain fundamental aspects of life are more likely to make us feel happy, and personality traits associated with satisfaction are equally applicable to all life phases, and in fact, become stronger as we age [1].
In Big Five terms, people who are emotionally stable - and non-neurotic - are those most likely to find life satisfactory [2].
What Are The 'Big Five' Traits That Make A Person A Happy Person?
There has been a long-standing belief among researchers that certain personality types are more closely associated with finding happiness in life than others.
For the first time, the study explores whether these associations are related to particular life phases or if they are observed at all ages. In the study, psychologists utilised the Big Five personality model to describe a variety of human characteristics [3].
Here are the 'Big Five' personality traits:
It is a set of five broad personality traits that define the way an individual thinks, feels, and behaves. Their first letters spell the word "OCEAN." sequentially.

- Openness - This trait describes a person who is open to new experiences, may engage in "magical thinking", and may be eccentric. When someone lacks Openness, they are inflexible and closed-minded.
- Conscientiousness - An irresponsible, distractable, or thoughtless individual with too little of the trait is characterised as a motivated, perfectionist workaholic.
- Extraversion - It is described as a social individual who may also be thrilling and attention-seeking. There may be a lack of extraversion, resulting in a person becoming withdrawn or cold towards others.
- Agreeableness - A person who is agreeable seeks to get along with others and may be selfless in their efforts. They may also be submissive and gullible. Low levels of agreeableness can result in deceitful, manipulative, uncaring, and suspicious behaviour [4].
- Neuroticism - People with low levels of neuroticism are often insecure, overly emotional, and perhaps depressed as well as helpless.
How Do The Big Five Traits Make A Person Happy?
A personality cannot be described exclusively by a single type, and most people have a combination of them. Some psychologists use slightly different names for the traits, and it is important to keep in mind that no one personality can be described exclusively by a single type [5].
In the presence of an individual who is neither high-neurotic nor low-neurotic, but is balanced between the two, emotional stability is achieved, which is a key component of life satisfaction.

On A Final Note...
It is the first study to demonstrate that certain personality traits are more associated with overall satisfaction. According to the researchers, "What you put out, you get back." In other words, when we are positive and optimistic, people will want to be around us and be supportive of us.
