Parents Day 2023: Mastering The Art Of Dealing With Ageing Parents' Anger
As we celebrate Parents Day 2023, apart from all the hunky-dory stuff, it is important to recognise the challenges that come up as your parents' age. The challenges that come with taking care of ageing parents are often hush-hushed because let's be honest, accepting this could brand you as a heartless child who can't take care of their parents.

But I believe, it is of extreme importance that we recognise and understand our ageing parents instead of brushing it under the carpet and eventually resulting in unfavourable outcomes.
So the first step here is to accept that as your parents (and you) age, they can get cranky and it is completely normal. Therefore, in this article, we will explore strategies to handle and diffuse your ageing parents' anger.
How To Take Care Of Your Ageing Parents' Anger?

1. Understand their emotions
Taking the time to understand why your parents are getting angry can help you respond with empathy and compassion. Their anger could be masking deeper emotions such as frustration, fear, or sadness.
2. Practice active listening
When your parents express their anger, it is important that you respectfully listen to their concerns. Give them your full attention, maintain eye contact, and provide verbal and non-verbal cues that show you are engaged in the conversation.
3. Avoid becoming defensive
It is a natural response to be triggered when your parents are being cranky but try to remember that your parents' anger is not a personal attack. Instead of responding with more anger or defensiveness, respond with calmness and understanding and not be condescending.

4. Encourage open communication
Create a safe environment for your parents to express their emotions freely. Encourage open communication by asking open-ended questions and being a non-judgmental listener. By providing them with a sense of trust and acceptance, you can help your parents feel heard and understood.
5. Offer alternative outlets for their emotions
Sometimes, anger can be a sign of pent-up frustration. Encourage your parents to explore alternative outlets for their emotions, such as engaging in physical activity, hobbies etc. Providing them with healthy coping mechanisms can significantly reduce their anger levels.

On A Final Note...
Taking care of ageing parents can be challenging, but with the right approach, we can navigate their anger with empathy and understanding. More importantly, don't baby them or speak down to them as if they are helpless and must need help around the clock.
As we celebrate Parents Day in 2023, let's commit to nurturing our parents' emotional well-being and creating a supportive environment for them.
