ENT Check-Ups After 40: Expert Explains Why Regular Screening Matters

As we grow older, our bodies undergo many changes, and the ear, nose, and throat are no exception. Sometime after 40, many people start to become aware of the gradual but steady and insidious onset of hearing loss, balance difficulties, persistent sinus infections, or throat discomfort. These are usually attributed to age and ignored; however, periodic ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) regular check-ups can detect such problems and treat them before they get complicated later in life.

We spoke to Dr Manoj Kumar Lath, Consultant ENT, Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneshwar, who explained the importance of ENT check-ups after 40.

Hearing Loss: A Common Yet Overlooked Change

Perhaps the most common worry, after the age of 40, is presbycusis (age-related hearing loss). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a person is considered to have hearing loss if they are unable to hear as well as someone with normal hearing, which is defined as hearing thresholds of 20 dB or higher in both ears. "Regular hearing tests can help pick this up early and give the child a chance for timely interventions, such as hearing aids or therapy," said Dr Lath.

Sinus and Nasal Issues: More Than Just a Stuffy Nose

Likewise, ongoing nasal congestion and sinus infections may be a sign of chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, or potentially the first signs of allergies that worsen over time. Similarly, snoring will cause high blood pressure and increase the risk of heart attacks. Hence, a new-born hearing check is also required.

Throat Symptoms That Shouldn't Be Ignored

For the throat, recurrent hoarseness, or swallowing problems, or a sore that doesn't heal, are also red flags. "These conditions should be brought to your physician's attention as they could indicate anything from acid reflux to, in rare cases, early head and neck cancers. Routine ENT examinations can aid in distinguishing benign causes from those needing intervention," added Dr Lath.

Lifestyle & Environmental Triggers

Environmental and lifestyle factors, such as smoking, environmental pollution exposure, and long-term use of earphones, can also increase the risk of ENT disorders. Annual or biannual check-ups can help them track these risks, make recommendations for preventing problems, and keep your ears, nose, and throat in good shape.

According to a 2025 survey of 56,176 people in cities like Delhi, Meerut, Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad, Rohtak, Chandigarh, Kanpur, etc, the healthcare provider found that 55% of them reported ENT issues like hearing loss, sore throats, and nasal irritation or congestion, which cause significant discomfort and raise concerns about long-term health impacts. However, 68% of those impacted did not seek medical advice.

Bottomline

Dr Lath concluded, "The health of one's ENT has a significant impact on quality of life, ability to communicate, and balance. For people over 40, preventive screening isn't just a question of disease detection, but the ability to keep the senses with which we receive information about the world. Frequent ENT check-ups make sure that small problems do not escalate to have a significant impact on health and help people age well."
