Food adulteration, the intentional addition of inferior or harmful substances to food, has become a pressing concern, endangering public health and undermining trust in food safety standards. The recent inspections conducted by the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department (FDA) in Karnataka have once again highlighted the alarming prevalence of unsafe food manufacturing practices.
This crackdown comes in the wake of an earlier investigation in Bengaluru, which exposed the dangers of plastic contamination in food products. These incidents underscore the urgent need for stricter enforcement of food safety regulations and increased public awareness regarding food adulteration.
Crackdown On Ice Cream And Cool Drink Manufacturers
During a two-day inspection, the FDA in Karnataka uncovered serious violations in the production of ice creams, ice candies, and cool drinks. Nearly half of the inspected establishments were found guilty of using hazardous ingredients, including detergent powder and phosphoric acid, to cut costs and enhance product texture and fizz. More disturbingly, synthetic milk-often containing urea, starch, and detergent was discovered being used as a substitute for genuine milk. Additionally, contaminated water, unsafe coloring agents, and excessive artificial flavoring were common issues among these products, posing severe health risks to consumers.
The inspection also extended to 590 eateries, including restaurants, messes, and hotels, where 214 establishments were found lacking proper pest control measures. Consequently, fines totalling Rs 1,15,000 were imposed on violators, reinforcing the widespread nature of food safety breaches. Another Rs 38,000 in penalties was levied on manufacturers found guilty of using harmful substances in ice cream and cool drinks. The FDA's findings have exposed a blatant disregard for consumer health, calling for immediate corrective measures in food production and hygiene practices.
The Bengaluru Plastic Contamination Incident
Prior to this recent crackdown, the FDA had intensified its efforts to eliminate plastic from the food industry, particularly in the production and packaging of traditional sweets like holige. Ahead of the Ugadi festival, officials discovered the widespread use of plastic sheets in preparing and packaging holige, a concerning practice given the health risks associated with plastic contamination.
One of the key issues identified was the rolling of holige dough on printed plastic sheets, which were then placed on hot cooking surfaces. This process caused the plastic to detach and release toxic chemicals into the food. Furthermore, holige was often wrapped in single-use plastic, exposing consumers to endocrine-disrupting chemicals like phthalates and bisphenols (BPA). These substances have been linked to hormonal imbalances, reproductive health issues, and an increased risk of metabolic disorders and cancer.
The FDA also uncovered significant adulteration in jaggery, a vital ingredient in many traditional sweets. Harmful substances such as washing soda, chalk powder, and metanil yellow-a chemical dye were found in several jaggery samples. These adulterants not only degrade food quality but also pose long-term health hazards.

Food adulteration is driven primarily by economic gain, allowing businesses to increase profit margins while reducing production costs. By substituting quality ingredients with cheaper alternatives, manufacturers deceive consumers and compromise food safety. The high demand for certain food products, coupled with limited supply, further encourages such unethical practices. As a result, food adulteration not only affects the nutritional value of our diet but also poses serious health risks ranging from digestive disorders to chronic illnesses.
Types And Consequences Of Food Adulteration
Food adulteration can take various forms, each posing unique dangers to public health:
Chemical Adulteration: Harmful dyes, pesticides, and preservatives are added to enhance appearance or extend shelf life. For example, non-permitted colors in spices can lead to severe health risks, including cancer and poisoning.
Physical Adulteration: Non-edible substances such as dust, stones, or husk are mixed into food products, reducing their quality.
Substitution: High-value ingredients are replaced with inferior substances, such as synthetic milk for real milk.
Contamination: Decomposed or unclean materials are introduced into food products, increasing the risk of foodborne illnesses.

To combat food adulteration, consumers and authorities must take proactive steps:
