Heat Wave In India: How Often Should You Shower? How Many Showers A Day Is Safe?
A heatwave warning has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for four states over the next three to four days - West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar. Heat waves are characterized by temperatures ranging from 40 to 37 degrees Celsius in plains, 37 to 30 degrees in coastal areas, and 30 to 30 degrees in hilly regions.

And with the temperature soaring high, it is natural for us to want to get some relief - and what's better than a quick shower, right? I find myself taking 4-5 quick showers, which got me thinking - how many showers a day is safe? Am I really making a conscious choice here? So, here were are!
How Often Should You Shower?
Showering is an important part of personal hygiene and should be done regularly. How often you should shower depends on many factors, such as your lifestyle, the environment you live in, and any medical conditions you may have [1].
Generally speaking, it is recommended to shower at least once a day. People who are particularly active, live in a hot or humid climate or have an underlying medical condition may need to shower more frequently.
It is important to choose the right type of soap and shampoo for your skin type and needs. Pay attention to how your skin and hair respond to different products. If your skin or hair becomes dry or irritated, switch to a milder soap or shampoo.
When showering, make sure to wash your entire body, including your hair, face, and any other areas of your body. Take your time and use warm water, not hot. Hot water can dry out your skin and cause irritation. Finish your shower with a few minutes of cold water to close the pores in your skin [2][3].

Your showering routine should also include exfoliating your skin once or twice a week with a body scrub, which helps to remove dead skin cells. After showering, make sure to moisturise your skin with a gentle moisturiser.
How Many Showers A Day Is Safe?
Most experts recommend showering no more than once a day, and bathing every two to three days. This is because showering too often can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and itchiness [4].
Additionally, showering and bathing puts pressure on the environment since water use increases. To avoid wasting water, it is best to keep showers short, around five to ten minutes, and only do it when necessary.
Overall, two quick showers per day is usually a safe and healthy amount. Keep showers to a maximum of 10 minutes, and consider taking a shower every other day if possible. And if the heat is a bit too unbearable, you can take three quick showers a day - but make sure you don't shower more than that [5].

On A Final Note...
It's generally recommended that you don't take more than two showers per day. Overwashing can cause skin irritation and inflammation, as well as eczema flare-ups, and strip away the skin's natural oils.
Also, by taking short showers, you can save up to four gallons of water. Longer showers can waste up to 17 gallons of water, so you should limit how long you shower.
