Eye Flu Cases In India: How To Prevent Conjunctivitis In Children? Expert Says
As the heavy downpour continues in several parts of the country, there have been reports of a rise in eye flu cases in India. Eye flu, formally known as conjunctivitis or pink eye is rapidly spreading in Delhi, Gujrat etc. prompting health experts to issue advisory warnings to the public.

Authorities in Agra have ordered educational institutions, especially schools to be shut for a period of time as most of the eye flu cases in India are reported among children, with the number of cases reaching the mark of 100 a day.
Get medical attention promptly if a child shows symptoms of conjunctivitis, such as redness, itching, discharge, or sensitivity to light.
With the rise in cases of eye flu and its major risk on children, we asked our expert Dr Arya Krishnan, NHS UK the best ways to prevent the onset of conjunctivitis or eye flu in kids.
How To Prevent Conjunctivitis In Children?
1. Maintain good hygiene practices:
- Teach children the importance of washing hands regularly, especially before touching their eyes.
- Encourage them to avoid touching or rubbing their eyes unnecessarily, as this can spread the infection.

2. Promote cleanliness in personal belongings:
- Regularly clean and disinfect items that come in contact with the child's eyes, such as eyeglasses, contact lenses, and eye drops.
- Advise against sharing personal eye care items with others, as this can increase the risk of infection transmission.
3. Emphasise the importance of a healthy diet:
- Ensure that children consume a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which can boost their immune system and help fight off infections.
- Add eye-healthy foods such as carrots, spinach, oranges, and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids to your kid's diet.
4. Avoid exposure to irritants and allergens:
- Limit children's exposure to smoke, dust, pollen, and other potential irritants that can trigger conjunctivitis.
- Suggest keeping windows closed during peak pollen seasons and using air purifiers to reduce indoor allergens.
5. Encourage regular eye check-ups:
- Regular eye examinations can help detect any underlying eye conditions and ensure early intervention if required.
- Provide examples of common eye conditions in children, such as allergies, dry eyes, and refractive errors.

On A Final Note...
Preventing conjunctivitis in children is crucial to ensure their well-being and minimise the spread of eye flu cases in India. With these precautions in place, we can create a safe environment for our children and reduce the incidence of conjunctivitis in India.
