Each year on Mother's Day, we celebrate women who hold families together with unwavering strength and care. But in doing so, we often overlook a quiet truth; many women forget to care for themselves in the process. Dr Nisha Buchade, a renowned gynaecologist and obstetrician from Vasavi Hospitals, believes that this needs to change.

"Traditionally, women are the health keepers of the family. Even though women prioritise the well-being of their family members, many women tend to neglect their own health. It is time for women to focus on their health first, as a healthy woman can take better care of her entire family," says Dr Buchade.

As Mother's Day is around the corner, she urges women to take a simple but transformative pledge, to put their health first.

Food First : Why Nutrition Matters More Than You Think

One of the most common sacrifices women make is skipping meals or delaying them while caring for others. Dr Buchade points out that this pattern, over time, takes a toll.

"Women often tend to neglect eating food at the right time as they are busy cooking or feeding their kids. Eating the right food at the right time is crucial. A balanced diet should consist of no more than 50% carbohydrates, 30% proteins, and 20% fats. It is important to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner on time without delays.

In India, many women are protein deficient and anaemic, making proper nutrition even more vital. Staying hydrated by drinking three to four litres of water daily, especially in summer, is important. Including seasonal fruits, a high-protein diet, and a portion of vegetables every day helps maintain overall health."

A woman who nourishes herself is better equipped to nourish her family-emotionally and physically.

Move More : Make Space For Physical Activity

Between managing households, children, and careers, women often set exercise aside as optional. But Dr Buchade warns that skipping regular movement is a health risk women can no longer afford.

"Women who are busy with household chores often neglect exercises. I recommend that regular exercise is equally essential. Women should engage in 40 minutes to an hour of physical activity at least five days a week, whether it's yoga, cardio, or any other form of exercise."

Movement isn't a luxury-it's a necessity for long-term health and emotional well-being.

Regular Check-Ups : Prevention Is Powerful

Women are often vigilant about their children's medical needs, but when it comes to their own annual screenings and health checks, they tend to postpone them indefinitely. The doctor points out,

"Besides these, annual health check-ups, including blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound, mammography and pap smear, should not be neglected. Additionally, women should keep track of vaccinations for their children and family members to ensure their well-being."

A woman who keeps herself well can continue to be the pillar her family relies on.
