A Coffee Remedy For Prostate Cancer

What exactly is Prostate Cancer?
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer after lung cancer in the US and Europe. It is a type of cancer which develops in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system and spreads to the other parts of the body, mainly, bones and lymph nodes. The causes of prostate cancer is unknown and research is still going on.
This cancer is generally slow, primarily effective to men over 50 years of age. This means the main risk factors are age and family history i.e, genetics.
Symptoms: Pain in the penis, difficulty in urinating, problems during intercourse or erectile dysfunction are common symptoms of prostate cancer. The cancer can also be detected through screening tests or a biopsy of prostate gland.
How Is Coffee Beneficial?: Coffee has antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits that has proved to reduce chances of lethal prostate cancer( a type of disease which is more critical to prevent). The effects of coffee in the Harvard University's study showed that the effects of coffee whether caffeinated or decaffeinated, lowers the risk of prostate cancer. The researchers believe that the benefits aren't coming from caffeine but some other ingredient of the beverage.
It is believed that anti-inflammatory content of coffee reduces inflammation in the body which has been linked with higher prostate cancer risk. Coffee has effect on insulin, glucose metabolism and sex hormone levels which are highly affected by prostate cancer. The compounds in coffee helps regulate insulin as higher insulin levels has more chances of prostate cancer.
What The Research Says: In the 22 year study (1986-2008), men were asked to report their coffee consumption. After studying their health, researchers discovered that men who drank the highest amount of coffee (6 cups) on a regular basis had the lowest chances of prostate cancer and were 60% less likely to die from the disease. It also proved that those who had 3 cups of coffee daily were 30% less likely to die from the disease and those who did not drink at all drank it on an irregular basis. It was also conducted on men who smoke and don't exercise and it showed positive response. Therefore consuming 1-3 cups of coffee a day can drop the chances of prostate cancer by 30%.
Prevention:
- Broccoli is a cancer prevention vegetable. Prefer eating steamed broccoli rather than microwaving it.
- Garlic can reduce the risk of prostate cancer as it contains sulfur compounds that may stimulate the immune system's defense against cancer.
- Herbal products like saw palmetto, pygeum, cernilton and stinging nettle reduces prostate enlargement and eliminating it by reducing estrogen levels.
But the researchers are still not advising to start drinking massive amount of coffee based on their study as further research is on to come up with a more valid conclusion. This finding has been done after the study on benefits of coffee for curing breast cancer among women was conducted recently.
