Causes
According to the research scientists a variety of biologic, genetic and environmental factors seem to be involved in causing such a disorder. They even say that the abnormality may be in the genes that regulate neurotransmitters. However, not everyone with a family member who has bipolar disorder will develop the disease. Other factors that may contribute to bipolar disorder include drug abuse and stressful or traumatic events.

Treatment
Bipolar Disorder cannot be cured completely but it can be managed by pharmacological and psychotherapeutic techniques. Most people with bipolar disorder take medication to regulate their moods. One of the best medication approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to treat both the manic and depressive episodes of bipolar disorder is Quetiapine (Seroquel).

The first line treatment for manic episodes is Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid). This drug is widely used as a mood stabilizer. Doctors also use antidepressant medications to treat the depression associated with bipolar disorder. Some of these are paroxetine (Paxil), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), sertraline (Zoloft) and bupropion (Wellbutrin). These drugs may not affect the mental emotions immediately. The patients is advised to continue the medication for several days to tackle the disorder

The recent research by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), states that certain anti psychotic drugs may increase the risk of diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. Therefore, make sure to ask the doctor to regularly monitor you if you are taking Risperdal, Seroquel and Zyprexa for bipolar disorder.

Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy complements drug therapy, therefore doctors recommend to use it simultaneously when an individual is under medication. The therapist will help to detect patterns leading up to episodes of bipolar disorder and even helps to identify things that trigger these episodes. Psychotherapy helps to provide strategies for managing stress and coping with uncertainties. Therapy may be individual or in a group both can be effective if approached with a positive attitude
