TikTok Egg Diet: What Is It All About? Is It Healthy? Can It Aid Weight Loss?
TikTok is synonymous with trends - although the social media platform is banned in India, we still get to know what happens over there - thanks to the choke-hold TikTok has on society.
Although TikTok's obsession with making everything a trend can sometimes be helpful, it isn't always so - the platform contains both healthy eating options and entirely unhealthy dishes masquerading as healthy.

Following the numerous trends of pink sauce, lettuce water, and others, a new trend is gaining traction on the site -the 10-day egg diet [1].
Nutrition experts are concerned that TikTok's egg diet is encouraging people to lose weight in an extremely restrictive manner.
What is the TikTok egg diet? What are its benefits?
TikTok Egg Diet
In the TikTok egg diet trend, participants are usually required to consume between three and six eggs per day, along with a limited selection of other foods such as vegetables, fruits, and lean protein sources. Bread, pasta, and sugary snacks are frequently prohibited by the challenge [2].
Hundreds of thousands of likes and millions of views have been received by videos showing TikTokers attempting the 10-day egg diet.
Is TikTok Egg Diet Healthy?
According to the TikTok egg diet, eggs are eaten for every meal, along with low-carbohydrate snacks such as fruit, low-carb vegetables, and protein. Thus, it is evident that this diet is not healthy.
It is important to understand that a diet focusing on one food group excludes many healthy food groups that are otherwise beneficial to the body. This can result in nutritional deficiencies, fatigue, weight loss of unhealthy proportions, mood changes, muscle weakness, and hair loss [3].

In the short term, this diet will increase your metabolism and burn fat, however, it may ultimately slow down your metabolism and make it more difficult to lose weight in the long run [4].
Several TikTokers who have followed through on the trend admit there are a few unpleasant side effects, such as nausea and stomach irritation.
Why Is The TikTok Egg Diet Unhealthy?
The following are the main reasons why the egg diet cannot be sustained over the long term:
- In most diets, certain foods or groups of foods are prohibited. However, even though eliminating certain foods can help contribute to a daily calorie deficit, this technique will also trigger cravings. The basic principle of any diet that prohibits a certain food or group of foods is that they will invariably induce cravings, leading you to cheat on your diet [5].
- Experts agree that any diet can be difficult to adhere to in everyday life since it tends to be very strict and does not allow any variation [6].
- There is no such thing as a long-term diet, and putting a deadline on just about anything sets you up for failure. Some of the most common ways diets are advertised are as quick-fix time frames, such as losing 30 pounds in 90 days and getting a flat tummy in one week.
- Diets that claim to burn more calories than they contain, such as celery, are based on very flawed science, or may not be based on any science at all [7].
Is It Healthy To Lose 10 Pounds In 10 Days?
10 pounds is approximately 4.5 kilograms. Losing significant amounts of weight quickly is not recommended and may pose a serious risk. For safe and healthy weight loss, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends losing approximately 1-2 pounds (0.4-0.9 kilograms) per week [8].

On A Final Note...
Make sure you do not fall victim to unsustainable and unhealthy diet trends such as those associated with TikTok. Only begin a weight loss program with the guidance and supervision of a professional or a physician.
