What Is Bigorexia? Is It Dangerous?
What is bigorexia? A small percentage of the bodybuilders tend to suffer from this disorder. Here are some facts.
Most of us know only about anorexia but there is another disorders known as bigorexia which is just the opposite of anorexia.
A small percentage of the bodybuilders tend to suffer from this disorder. And yes, bigorexia is dangerous as it could cause depression and suicide.
In fact, some men who suffer this disorder get into steroid abuse and drug addiction too. Here are some more facts about this disorder.

How It Starts
A person suffering from bigorexia wants to look big. To grow big, one may start obsessively lifting weights. But even after growing big and muscular, he perceives himself as small! This causes stress and anxiety disorder.

Another Name
There is another name for this disorder. It is known as muscle dysmorphia. It is more about distorted self perception.

Is It An Obsession?
A person suffering from bigorexia may engage in compulsive body building. Obsessed with big muscles, the person may cut social life and spend most of the day inside the gym.

Steroid Abuse
Gradually, steroid abuse follows. From protein powders, supplements to usage of anabolic steroids, the person may leave no stone unturned in the process of growing huge.

After Growing Huge...
But even after growing huge, the satisfaction never comes as the person suffering from this disorder may still perceive himself as small and inadequate!

Who Are Affected?
Current statistics have very few recorded cases as most of the cases go unnoticed or undiagnosed. As bigorexia seems similar to low self esteem and anxiety, people around the person take it easily. But as the victim starts feeling depressed, the real danger starts.

What Causes This?
Bigorexia can be hereditary too. It can also be caused due to imbalances in the brain chemistry too. Some people who were bullied or abused as weaklings during their teens may also suffer from this disorder.
Most of the men are brainwashed that looking huge, muscular and strong is important for a man. Also, every man secretly aspires to look like a super hero.

Treatment Options
A person suffering from bigorexia should seek medical assistance. Cognitive behavioural therapy and even medication may help.
