  • This diet works on the principle of Gl (Glycemic Index ), that is basically how the particular food affects the glucose or sugar level of your body.
  • Any kind of food will raise the sugar level when it gets broken down; the question is how much and how quickly.
  • If it raises the sugar level rapidly then it has a high GI and if it doesn't do so then it has a low GI.
  • Another way of putting it is that the foods that get digested quickly score high on this index because they get broken down to sugars very quickly. All kinds of refined food will fall under this category like polished rice, sugar etc.
  • Fibre rich foods like oats, broccoli, broken wheat (dalia) will score lower because they take a long time to get digested. Glucose has a GI of 100 and all foods are ranked against that as constant. Foods are divided into 3 categories; low GI food, medium GI foods and high GI foods.

  • The first phase of the diet is for quick weight loss. You are encouraged to eat only low GI foods so that you shed the flab rapidly and your body gets used to the mechanism of low glucose levels for about 3 to 6 months.
  • The second phase is maintaining that ideal weight you have achieved and slowly move towards normalcy. Now you can eat the right combination of low and medium GI foods.
  • The third phase would last from 2 years after the diet begins for the rest of your life. This in this phase you are expected to have imbibed the basic principle of this diet and learned to balance your food habits accordingly.
