Ramadan 2023: Foods To Eat At Suhoor To Remain Energised
The holy month of Ramadan has begun, and people who follow the fasting ritual fast from dawn to dusk. The fasting ritual is known as 'roza' in India. The festival of Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan.
Since Ramadan requires fasting from dawn to dusk, knowing which foods will provide long-lasting energy is important, especially during the summer months when the heat can exacerbate fatigue and dehydration.

Listed below are some foods that will help you stay hydrated and energised during suhoor.
Foods To Eat At Suhoor To Remain Hydrated
In choosing what to eat during Ramadan, remember that iftar and suhoor help you maintain your fast the following day, so making sure you consume the right foods is very important. Suhoor is the evening meal between dawn and sunset after which people fast until the following evening [1].
Here is a list of foods to eat during Suhoor in order to remain hydrated and active.
1. Healthy fats
The consumption of healthy fats will also make you feel full and satisfied during the day [2]. Some examples of healthy fats are avocados, nut butter, nuts and seeds, ground flaxseed, hemp seeds, etc.
2. Fruits and veggies
In addition to being high in fibre and vitamins and minerals, fruits and vegetables also contain high levels of water, which can help you stay hydrated when fasting.
Fruits/vegetables that have high water content include watermelon, strawberries, cucumber, lettuce, and kale [3].

3. Protein
Adding protein to your suhoor will ensure you feel satiated for longer during your fast. Protein is an important nutritional component that helps you build and maintain muscle, but it has yet another important benefit during Ramadan.
You can eat protein foods for suhoor such as eggs, Greek yoghurt, beans, lentils, fish, and skinless chicken.
4. Rice
It is important to note that high-fibre carbohydrate foods like brown rice and wholemeal bread take longer to digest, therefore helping to sustain energy levels for the duration of the fasting [3].
5. Water
While fasting, it is important to ensure you consume enough water during suhoor to avoid dehydration. Aim to drink at least 2-3 cups of water during suhoor [4].

On A Final Note...
Remember that while gorging on food, if you take your time while chewing and give full attention to the food then you will feel full for a longer period of time.
Make sure you don't indulge in any other activity while eating, otherwise, your brain might not register it well and you could start feeling hungry during the daytime.
