Why A Second Dengue Infection Can Be Deadly
Several countries around the world are caught under the dengue scare, with the mortality and virility rates increasing on a daily basis.
Dengue, the mosquito-borne viral disease is commonly found in tropical and subtropical climates around the world, like India, Bangladesh etc. Dengue fever is caused by four different strains of the dengue virus, and once a person is infected with one strain, they are immune to that strain for life.

However, they can still be infected with the other three strains.
What Happens When You Get A Second Dengue Infection?
When a person is infected with a second strain of dengue, their immune system may react in a way that makes the infection more severe. This is because the antibodies that were produced in response to the first infection can actually make it harder for the body to fight off the second infection, a phenomenon is called antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE).
What Are The Symptoms Of A Second Dengue Infection?
The symptoms of a second dengue infection are similar to those of a first infection, but they are often more severe. This can include the following:
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Muscle and joint pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Rash
- Diarrhoea
- Bleeding gums or nose
- Swollen glands
- Fatigue
- Rapid breathing
- Shock

Why Is A Second Dengue Infection More Deadly?
There are a few reasons why a second dengue infection can be more deadly than a first infection.
- ADE: As mentioned above, ADE can make it harder for the body to fight off the second infection. This can lead to more severe symptoms and a higher risk of death.
- Lower platelet count: People who have a second dengue infection often have a lower platelet count than people who have a first infection. Platelets are necessary for blood clotting, so a low platelet count can increase the risk of bleeding.
- Inflammation: Dengue can cause a lot of inflammation in the body. This inflammation can damage organs and tissues, and it can also lead to shock.
How Can I Protect Myself From A Second Dengue Infection?
The best way to protect yourself from a second dengue infection is to avoid mosquito bites. Consider the following tips:
- Wear long sleeves and pants
- Use insect repellents
- Sleep under a mosquito net
- Eliminating mosquito breeding grounds around your house

On A Final Note...
If you have already had dengue, it is important to be aware of the symptoms of a second infection and to seek medical attention immediately if you think you may have been infected.
