Dengue Fever: Do You Have Dengue Or Severe Dengue? Find Common Symptoms
Dengue fever has been making headlines across India lately and for a concerning reason. Six individuals have tragically lost their lives while receiving treatment for dengue in West Bengal. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh remains on high alert, closely monitoring dengue cases.
Closer to home, Tamil Nadu has invoked the Public Health Act to combat dengue, and in Uttar Pradesh, even government school students are taking special precautions to avoid the disease. In Kozhikode and Kochi (Kerala) intermittent rain poses an additional threat, potentially exacerbating the dengue situation [1].

The situation in our neighbouring country, Bangladesh, is equally alarming, with a staggering 700 dengue-related deaths and 9,000 patients reported.
So, what do you need to know about dengue, its symptoms, and how to protect yourself and your loved ones from this mosquito-borne menace?
What Is Dengue?
Dengue, also known as breakbone fever, is a viral infection transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. This mosquito is active during the day, making it a significant health concern in India, especially during the monsoon season when mosquito breeding is at its peak.

Dengue Symptoms: What To Watch Out For
Dengue symptoms often begin 4 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Look out for the following:
- High fever: Sudden, high-grade fever is one of the earliest signs.
- Severe headache: Intense headaches are quite common.
- Pain behind the eyes: This can be excruciating.
- Joint and muscle pain: Earning dengue its nickname, "breakbone fever."
- Skin rash: A rash may appear a few days into the illness.
- Mild bleeding: Nosebleeds or gum bleeding can occur.

Dengue Vs. Severe Dengue: Spotting The Differences
Severe dengue, also known as dengue haemorrhagic fever, is a more critical condition. You might have severe dengue if you experience the following symptoms:
- Severe abdominal pain: Intense pain in the abdomen.
- Persistent vomiting: Repeated vomiting, often with blood.
- Bleeding: Serious bleeding from the gums, nose, or easy bruising.
- Breathing difficulty: Rapid breathing and a feeling of breathlessness.
Note: Severe dengue can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.

How Can I Protect Myself During A Dengue Outbreak?
To stay safe during a dengue outbreak in India, follow these steps:
- Mosquito control: Eliminate stagnant water around your home, as it's a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
- Use mosquito nets: Sleep under mosquito nets, especially during the day.
- Wear protective clothing: Cover your arms and legs with clothing, and use mosquito repellent on exposed skin.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration if you have dengue.
- Seek medical help: If you suspect dengue, consult a healthcare professional immediately.

On A Final Note...
In India, where dengue outbreaks are a recurring concern, understanding the symptoms and differences between dengue and severe dengue is crucial for your health. If you or someone you know experiences severe symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
