Brave 10-Year-Old In Australia Battles The 'Most Painful Condition' Ever Recorded
In Australia, a 10-year-old girl has been diagnosed with a disabling condition called complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), which causes excruciating pain in her right leg when touched. The condition is considered to be one of the most painful conditions known to mankind.

It was after a blister on Bella Macey's right foot became infected on a family vacation in Fiji that she was diagnosed with CRPS, referred to as the "most painful condition in the world."
The rare disease has halted Bell's life completely, which is believed to be caused by relatively minor accidents or surgeries. As Bella's family was unable to find answers in Australia, they turned to US doctors for help, as Bella cannot move, bear any pressure or sensation on her injured leg and foot, attend school, interact with friends or even wear pants.
"I can't have a shower, I can't have a bath," Bella said, adding, "I can't put (on) any sheets or anything on ... even with a tissue, you can't touch it with anything, otherwise I will scream," said the young girl to NY Post.

What Is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome?
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain disorder that usually affects an arm or leg. It is characterised by severe pain, swelling, and changes in the skin. CRPS typically develops after an injury or trauma to the affected area, but the cause of the condition is unknown [1].
The pain associated with CRPS can be so intense that it can be debilitating and interfere with a person's quality of life.
Symptoms Of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Symptoms of complex regional pain syndrome include burning pain, skin temperature changes, skin colour changes, swelling, stiffness, and decreased range of motion [2]. Other common symptoms include sensitivity to touch, increased sweating, and depression.

Causes Of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
The cause of complex regional pain syndrome is unknown, however, it is believed to be triggered by an injury or trauma to the affected area [3]. Additionally, psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression have been linked to the onset of CRPS.
How Is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Treated?
The treatment for complex regional pain syndrome is to reduce the pain and improve the function of the affected area [4]. Treatment options include physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacological interventions, nerve blocks, and psychotherapy.

- Occupational therapy is used to help patients adjust to their new lifestyle and manage their pain.
- Physical therapy is often used to improve range of motion and decrease pain [5].
- Pharmacological interventions such as medications, injections, and nerve blocks can also be used to reduce the pain associated with CRPS.
- Psychotherapy can help patients cope with the stress and anxiety associated with the condition.
