How To Wear Lal Par (Red Border) Saree During Durga Puja: Step By Step Guide To Create The Ultimate Bong Look!
Ladies, the Durga Puja is just around the corner and if you are planning to celebrate the five-day-long Durga Puja festival by visiting Sarbojanin Durga Puja Pandals, then you have to dress up right! Yes, Bengalis are known for their beautiful handloom sarees and the Laal par saree is a must-wear traditional ensemble for the Durga Puja celebration!
Draping the white-red color Bengali saree is unique and looks graceful and complete when accentuated with the right jewelry and beauty aesthetics!

This Durga Puja, flaunt a quintessential Bong Look with a stunning Lal Par saree and earn deserving compliments. Wonder how to drape it though? Here's our step-by-step guide to wearing a Bengali saree and being the epitome of femininity, style, and grace!
Step 1 - Pick a Saree and Other Things
Before you begin dressing up, ensure that you have all the required items with you. This includes a red and white Kolkata cotton saree or lal par saree, matching blouse, safety pins, house keys, chabi challa, traditional jewelry, and safety pins to complete the bong avatar!
Step 2 - Wear the Matching Blouse
The first step to featuring a Bengali look is to wear a matching blouse or choli. You can also opt for a contrasting blouse that can add an offbeat look to the red-white Bengali saree. If you prefer the simplistic tailored look for the blouse then go ahead and flaunt one or add some interesting details to the blouse like lace, embroidery, mirror work, or gota patti work to accentuate the blouse fabric!

Step 3 - Drape the Saree
After you are done putting on the choli, start draping the saree in an authentic Bengali way! Begin by wrapping the fabric around your waist twice and ensuring that there are no creases formed along the way. Straighten up the creases with your hand if you find any. Now, tuck in both ends of the saree at the waist and secure the same with safety pins on the right side.
Ideally, drape the saree in front of the mirror to check how you are progressing towards wearing the saree the correct way!
Step 4 - Make the Pleats of a Saree
Make the pleats of the saree by folding it lengthwise across your body frame. Then, hold the one end of the Bengali saree and secure it by tucking it into your waist. Next, fold the slides towards tour left and right till the ends meet at the waistline. Secure the pleats with a safety pin to ensure they remain in one place. Creating clean pleats provides a neat look and gives a proper shape to you!
Step 5 - Tie the Saree Pallu
It is the pallu of the Bengali saree, that offers a unique look to the traditional ensemble! Drape the pallu over your left or right shoulder and secure the same with a safety pin. You can also take the pallu from the back and let it rest on your shoulder or upper arm!
Step 6 - Keep the Makeup Interesting
Go for a natural or minimal makeup look including a neutral base with just a hint of gloss at the cheeks. Accentuate the eyes with winged eyeliner and curled-up lashes. Pick a bold colour for your lips i.e. deep red, brown to complement the red of the saree. Wear a big red bindi, which is a must addition for any Bong lady.
Tie the hair in a sleek bun and accentuate it with a gajra or fresh flowers. You can also tie the hair in a sleek ponytail or leave it open, as per your preference!
Step 7 - Accessorize
After you are done draping the saree, it is time to accentuate the ethnic Bengali look with some interesting jewelry pieces. You can either choose traditional gold jewelry including a short or long haar neckpiece, jhumka earrings, kada bangles, and a finger ring. Or, you can add a dash of contemporary touch to your ethnic saree look with boho-style chunky necklaces, statement earrings, rings, and brooches.
If you are married, add a dash of authenticity by wearing Shakha Pola bangles (white conch shell bangles, red lac bangles) that are mostly handmade and a work of art! Carry a potli or clutch bag to complement the Bong saree look!
