Cannes 2023: All You Need To Know About This Prestigious Film Festival

The 76th annual Cannes Film Festival is due to take place from 16 to 27 May 2023. The prestigious film event will be hosted in the resort city of Cannes, on the French Riviera. The event will open with the French film Jeanne du Barry starring Johnny Depp and the event will close with Pixar's animated movie Elemental on the 27th! The Purpose of Cannes

Cannes was originally started as a competition to the Venice film festival. The year 1939 was supposed to be the commencing year for the film gala but was cancelled due to WWII. The 1st annual Cannes Film Festival was held from 20 September to 5 October 1946. Wherein 21 countries presented their films, which took place at the former Casino of Cannes.

The purpose of the Cannes was to create a dedicated space where art and creativity will be acknowledged. The Festival allows creative souls from the film industry to feature their films in different languages.

The Selection of Films

Each year, Cannes forms a committee to review the film's submissions. Around 2000 films get submitted each year and the committee selects around 50 feature films and 10 short movies to be part of the official selection. These screenings are segregated into categories that include jury competition, cine-foundation selections and films shown out of competition.

In 2019 and this year, Cannes revealed its selection committee to the public for the first time. The nine-person panel for 2020 included five women, including three who also served on last year's committee. This was a significant milestone for the festival in fulfilling its pledge to make strides in gender parity.

Entry at the Cannes

The festival allows the residents to apply for cinéphiles accreditation. Cannes restricts access to the official venues and certain groups can apply for accreditation. For instance, film professionals can receive access to events for all the festival venues.

The tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served requirements. One can purchase single tickets as well as subscription bundles and passes. International Critics' Week allows for free access to the public.

Cannes also screens classic movies underneath the stars at night at the Cinéma de la Plage. For instance, François Truffaut's "Les Quatre Cents Coups" was showcased in 2019. These screenings are open to the public as well!
