Jackfruit/Katal Curry Recipe
Jackfruit is a delightful fruit which has a strong aroma and sweet taste. You can either have cooked or raw jackfruit. This spring summer fruit is widely sold in the market now. You can try several recipes using this juicy fruit as the main ingredient. Apart from being delicious, jackfruit is healthy too. It is rich in nutrients like Vitamin C, A, potassium, iron, calcium, niacin and magnesium to name a few.
Jackfruit strengthens the immune system, has anti-aging properties, protects against cancer, improves digestion, controls asthma and lowers high blood pressure. Jackfruit is commonly called as katal in Hindi. Jackfruit or katal curry is a tasty Indian side dish that can be teamed up with rice or rotis.

- Jackfruit- 250 gms (peeled)
- Onions- 2 (sliced)
- Garlic- 6-7 pods (minced)
- Green chillies- 2 (chopped)
- Turmeric powder- 1tsp
- Red chilli powder- 1 tsp
- Coriander powder- 1 ½ tsp
- Garam masala- 1tsp
- Cumin seeds- 1tsp
- Mustard seeds- ½ tsp
- Bay leaf- 1
- Salt- as per taste
- Oil- 2tbsp
- Water- 1 cup
Procedure
- Wash the jackfruit and clean it. Cut the jackfruit into 1 inch sized pieces.
- Pressure cook the jackfruit for a duration of 2 whistles. Strain and keep aside.
- Now heat oil in a frying pan. Add bay leaf, cumin and mustard seeds. When the seeds start to splutter, add onions.
- Saute the onions on a medium flame till it turns translucent.
- Add garlic, green chillies and mix well. Sprinkle salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and coriander powder. Cook for 2 minutes more.
- Add water and bring it to boil. Now, add boiled jackfruit and cook for 4-5 minutes.
- Sprinkle garam masala and cook for another minute.
Jackfruit or katal curry is ready to eat. Serve it hot as a side dish with roti or rice.
