Khara Pongal – Traditional Pongal Recipe
As Pongal (Sankranti) is just days away, our special pick of the day for the festival is the “Khara Pongal recipe". Khara pongal is prepared in every household of south India on the festive day. Pongal, also called the harvest festival is celebrated to thank the Sun god for the good harvest. Take a look at how to prepare the tasty khara pongal recipe and enjoy the recipe on the festive day.
Khara Pongal Recipe -
Ingredients:
1.1 Cup rice
2.1 Cup moong daal (green gram dal)
3.1/2 cup cashews (chopped)
4.3-4 Chillies (according to taste)
5.3 Cups water
6.2 tsp Dry coconut pieces (Optional)
7.1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
8.1 tsp Cumin seeds and mustard seeds
9.1 tsp Pepper powder or 1/2 tsp Peppercorns
10.Salt to taste
11.1 tsp oil
12.1 tsp ghee
Method:
1.Heat 1/2 teaspoon of ghee in a cooker and fry cashews until golden brown and keep it aside.
2.Heat a teaspoon of oil again in the same cooker and fry cumin and mustard seeds for a minute.
3.When the seeds start crackling add chopped chillies (or Chilli paste) to the above mixture.
4.Wash rice and moong dal well and add to the above mixture with 3 cups of water.
5.Then add tumeric powder, coconut, salt and stir the mixture well.
6.Cook the mixture till the third whistle and leave it to cool.
7.After half an hour add the fried cashews.
8.Garnish pongal with chopped coriander leaves. Serve pongal hot with a teaspoon of ghee. Tasty Khara pongal ready to serve.
