Simple Kalonji Wali Dal Recipe
A proper Indian meal is never complete without having dal. It is an integral dish of the Indian cuisine. However, sometimes, we do get bored of having the same dal again and again. That is why, there is a wide variety of dal recipes in all Indian cuisines.
When you move to the northern part of India, you will find the spicy variety of dals. In Punjab, dollops of butter and ghee is used in the preparation of dal. On the contrary, when you move to the eastern part of India, you will find that the dal recipes are prepared with simplest of ingredients.
On the other hand, when you move to the southern parts of India, the dal is cooked with vegetables and is renamed as sambar. But whatever be the ingredients, our humble dal continues to be our must-have item on daily diet.
Today, we have a special kalonji wali dal recipe from east India. This dal recipe is amazingly simple and nutritious. This is an excellent option for weight watchers and diabetics as well. As the name suggests, kalonji or the onion seeds, which is also known as kala jeera in Hindi, is the most important ingredient you need to prepare this dal recipe.
So, wait no more and take a look at the kalonji wali dal recipe and have a sumptuous meal.

Cooking time: 15 minutes
All you need
- Masoor dal (split red lentils)- 1 cup
- Tomatoes- 2 (chopped)
- Garlic- 4-5 cloves (chopped)
- Green chillies- 2 (slit)
- Kalonji (onion seeds)- 1tbsp
- Salt- as per taste
- Turmeric powder- 1tsp
- Coriander leaves- 2tbsp (chopped)
- Oil- 1tbsp

Procedure
1. Pressure cook the dal with two cups of water, salt and turmeric powder. Cook on medium flame.
2. Wait for two whistles and then switch off the flame. Keep the dal aside.
3. Now heat oil in a pan and add kalonji. Allow it to splutter.
4. Add the chopped garlic and fry for a minute.
5. Then, add the green chillies and tomatoes. Fry till the tomatoes become soft.
6. Now, add the cooked dal and mix well.
7. Simmer the dal on medium flame for about 3-4 minutes and then switch off the flame.
8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Kalonji wali dal is ready to be served. Enjoy this simple dal with steamed rice.
