Coconut & Sugar Modak Recipe For Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi is nearing and there is festivity in the air. This is one of the biggest festivals of Maharashtra, but today, people of other states are also celebrating it with vibrancy and passion.
While talking about Ganesh Chaturthi, you can't forget about modaks. In every idol or picture of Lord Ganesha, you can see him holding modaks in his palm. This is his favourite sweet.
So, if you are planning to welcome 'Ganapati Bappa' this year to your house, try this wonderful coconut and sugar modak recipe.

Actually, there are different types of modak recipes for Ganesh Chaturthi that people follow. In some households, rawa modak is famous; and in other places, it is made of motichoor.
But, the coconut and sugar modak recipe is authentic and it tastes just delicious. Every type of modak recipe for Ganesh Chaturthi can be either fried or steamed.
Coconut and sugar modak recipe also follows the same procedure. So, go through this simple coconut and sugar modak recipe and celebrate the festival to its fullest!
Serves - 5
Preparation Time - 15 minutes
Cooking Time - 20 minutes
Ingredients:
For Stuffing
1. Freshly grated coconut - 1 cup
2. Sugar - ½ cup
3. Cardamom powder - a pinch
4. Mixed nuts - 1 tbsp (powdered or finely chopped)
5. Jaggery - ½ cup (smashed)
6. Ghee - 2 to 3 tsp
7. Poppy seeds - 1 tsp
8. Khoya/Mawa - 2 tsp (optional)

For The Covering
1. Rice flour - 1 cup
2. Salt - a pinch
3. Ghee - ½ tbsp
4. Hot water - as per requirement
Procedure:
For The Covering
1. Boil water in a deep-bottomed pan.
2. Add salt and ghee into it and mix it well. Let it boil again.
3. Take a medium-sized bowl and take flour. Add ghee into it and mix well.
4. Now, add the dough into boiling water and mix well.
5. Lower the heat and cover the pan for a few minutes. Let the rice flour cook.
6. Now, remove it from the oven and take it on to a flat surface.
7. Knead the dough well, so that no lumps are formed.
8. While kneading, apply some oil or ghee on your palms and knead when the dough is still hot.
9. If you find it getting dry, use hot water as per the requirement and knead well to make it soft and smooth.
10. The dough is ready to be used now.

For The Stuffing
1. Take a pan and heat it.
2. Add ghee into the pan and sauté the poppy seeds (khas khas) for a few seconds.
3. Now, add coconut, sugar, jaggery, mixed nuts, cardamom powder and khoya (optional). Mix all the ingredients well.
4. Cook it until the mixture leaves moisture and begins to dry.
5. Lower the flame to avoid over burning the mixture.
6. Stir every 2 minutes until the mixture turns golden yellow.
7. If you think it is getting drier, add ghee and milk. Be careful about the consistency.
8. The stuffing for modak is ready.

To Make The Modak:
1. Pour some ghee or oil on to your palms and make small balls from the dough.
2. Give those balls a shape of a cone and press the corners with your finger to give a petal-like shape.
3. Fill the cones with stuffing and close the ends to give it a shape of figs.
4. Make a few and place those on a plate.
5. Now, if you want to fry those, heat oil in a pan and deep fry the modaks.
6. For steamed modaks, you should grease a banana leaf and put it in a steamer.
7. Steam the modaks for 5-6 minutes and the modaks are ready to be served.
