Shrimp Gumbo: An American Delicacy
Planning to prepare a prawn recipe in an American style to impress your family? Then just click to Shrimp Gumbo. The name sounds unfamiliar does it? Well, it is a popular prawn recipe from America. This American recipe comes from the South. The word 'gumbo' is an African word for lady's finger. Lady's Finger was an unknown vegetable for white American and the Africans introduced it to them. So in a way, Shrimp Gumbo is a prawn recipe of African descent.

Gumbo,
apart
from
prawns,
is
lady's
fingers
and
rice.
This
American
recipe
greatly
resembles
a
crock
pot
recipe
where
rice
and
prawns
are
cooked
in
spices
over
a
slow
fire.

Serves: 4
Preparation Time: 45 minutes
Ingredients
- Shrimps or prawns- 500 grams (medium sized prawns shelled and de-veined)
- Onion- 1 (chopped)
- Garlic pods- 5 (crushed)
- Green bell pepper or capsicum- 1 (chopped)
- Green chillies- 2 (chopped)
- Red chillies- 2 (chopped)
- Tomatoes- 2 (chopped)
- Thyme twigs- 2
- Celery or coriander leaves- 2 twigs (chopped)
- Vegetable stock- 3 cups
- Okra or lady's finger- 200 grams (chopped)
- Basmati rice- 1 cup (200 grams)
- Vegetable oil- 2tbsp
- Salt- as per taste
Procedure
1. Boil the prawns in water and salt for around 5 minutes. Strain the water and keep aside.
2. Heat oil in a deep bottomed pan. Saute the onions, capsicum and garlic in it for 2-3 minutes.
3. Then add the tomatoes, lady's finger, thyme, celery and chillies to it. Sprinkle salt and let it cook for 4-5 minutes on a low flame.
4. Pour the vegetable stock into it and let it cook on low flame for about 10 minutes.
5. Add the rice to the bubbling stock and also the prawns. Cover and cook for 20 minutes until the rice is cooked.
You can garnish Shrimp Gumbo with fresh celery twigs before serving it is a crock-pot.
