Malvani Prawn Curry Recipe

The name 'Malvani' comes from the name of a small town called Malvan which is situated on the west coast of Maharashtra. This area is also close to Goa. Hence, the Malvani cuisine is a mix of Maharashtrian and Goan styles of cooking.

Coconut is the most important ingredient used in Malvani cuisine. It is used in various forms like grated coconut, dried coconut or even the milk of coconut. Here is an extremely delicious and mouthwatering seafood recipe known as the Malvani prawn curry. The use of coconut in various forms and a blend of some exotic and fragrant spices make this recipe an absolute delight for all the seafood lovers.

Malvani Prawn Curry Recipe

Ingredients

  • Prawns- 500gms
  • Tamarind pulp- 2tbsp
  • Garlic- 3-4 cloves (minced)
  • Coconut milk- 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder- 1tsp
  • Garam masala powder- 1tsp
  • Salt- as per taste
  • Oil- 2tbsp
  • Coriander leaves- 2tbsp (chopped, for garnish)

For masala paste

  • Coconut- ½ cup (grated)
  • Onions- 2 (chopped)
  • Coriander seeds- 1tbsp
  • Fennel seeds- ½ tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds- ½ tsp
  • Green cardamoms- 2
  • Cinnamon stick- 1
  • Dry red chillies- 2
  • Cloves- 3
  • Oil- 1tbsp
  • Water- 2tbsp

Procedure

  1. Wash and clean the prawns properly. Marinate them with a pinch of salt. Keep it aside.
  2. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan add cinnamon, cloves, cardamoms, red chillies, fennel seeds, coriander seeds, fenugreek seeds and fry for a minute.
  3. Add onions and grated coconut. Fry for 4-5 minutes on medium flame.
  4. Once done, switch off the flame and let the mixture cool down completely.
  5. Once it cools down, grind this mixture with water in a mixer into a thick paste.
  6. Then heat oil in a pan add minced garlic and fry for a few seconds.
  7. Add turmeric powder and the prepared masala paste; fry for a minute on medium flame.
  8. Add coconut milk, salt and mix well.
  9. Now add the prawns and cook for about 10 minutes on low flame.
  10. Add tamarind pulp and garam masala powder to it. Mix well.
  11. After five minutes, switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.
