Bengali Fish Curry Without Onion
With the onion prices soaring sky high, it can hardly be used in our daily food as lavishly as before. So, does that mean we have to give up on eating good onion? Not necessarily as we Indians have a solution for everything. So, if you cannot afford to buy the 'luxurious onion' then do not worry. Here is a fish recipe without onion which will make your meal a complete delight.
Nothing delights a Bengali more than his favourite maacher jhol and bhath (fish curry and rice). So, Bengalis take a lot of pain to experiment with their favourite item, fish. This recipe is also from a Bengali mom's kitchen which is delicious, simple, quick and of course prepared without onion.

So, read through the recipe and give it a try. This tastes even better than the fish curry with onions!

Ingredients

Hilsa)-

- Potato- 1 (cut into thin slices)
- Ginger paste- 1tsp
- Green chillies- 3 (slit)
- Cumin seeds- 1tsp
- Turmeric powder- 1tsp
- Red chilli powder- 1tsp
- Cumin powder- 1tsp
- Rice flour- 1tbsp
- Sugar- 1tsp
- Salt- as per taste
- Mustard oil- 4tbsp
- Water- 1½ cups
- Coriander leaves- 2tbsp (chopped)
Procedure
- Wash and clean the fish pieces thoroughly with water.
- Marinate the fish pieces with half a spoon of turmeric powder and salt.
- Heat two tablespoon of mustard oil in a pan.
- Fry the fish pieces on all the sides for about 5-6 minutes on a low flame.
- Once done, transfer the fish pieces in a plate and keep them aside.
- Heat two tablespoon of oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Fry for a minute.
- Add ginger paste, green chillies, potatoes and fry on medium heat for about a minute.
- Mix turmeric powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder together in about half a cup of water and pour this mixture into the pan.
- Saute for about 3-4 minutes.
- Add salt, sugar and about half a cup of water. Mix well.
- Now add the fried fish pieces. Simmer for 3-4 minutes on a medium flame.
- Now mix the rice flour in about half a cup of water and pour it into the pan. Mix well and make sure lumps are not formed.
- Simmer for another couple of minutes and then switch off the flame.
- Garnish the fish curry with chopped coriander leaves.
Serve this delicious Bengali fish curry with steamed rice and have a hearty meal without onions.
