Skin Fasting Explained: What Happens When You Do Nothing To Your Skin
Everyday makeup, moisturizer, cleansing... your skin takes more than you imagine. It sometimes asks for letting it be, silently. Now, the beauty domain is often overflowing with 7-step routines, powerful serums and frequently changing trends. That's when the "less is more" skincare concept works as the required 'pause'.
At first glance, it may sound counterintuitive. Meaning, how can going "extra minimal" will heal and heal your skin? But the beauty idea is pretty simple. Give your skin a much-needed break from all the beauty products and see it rest, heal, and glow naturally!
Read on to understand this much-talked-about skincare principle!
What Is Skin Fasting?
Skin fasting as a term encourages a temporary or non-permanent pause from your daily skincare routine. Which means not using any cleanser, toner, moisturizer, toner, and sunscreen for a brief period of time.
The idea supports a belief that - regular usage of beauty and skincare products can overburden your skin and lead to congestion, irritation, and dependency. Our skin is innately intelligent. And when it is left untouched, it repairs the barriers, regulates oil production, and goes back to better balance.
Why People Are Loving It?
We now live in the era of intuitive beauty and skinimalism where mindfulness reigns supreme. And skin fasting works like a detox for your skin. It is ideal for those who get overwhelmed with multiple skincare products or those who experience sudden flare-ups despite the usage of high-end products. The idea of stepping back and allowing the skin "to be" advocates a certain healing and logic.
How To Do Skin Fasting?
For a start, go basic by using only those products that clean and moisturize. You can always take a step ahead and use only water to wash the face and skin all skincare for a day or two. The 'extreme' in the skin fasting method includes - saying no to washing and moisturizing completely, for a max of 4 days.
What Are The Possible Benefits?
Skin fasting results in a calmer, less reactive complexion and more balanced oil production. The skin feels healthier overall as it will begin to produce moisture more effectively. Taking a mental vacation from the never-ending cycle of purchasing and using items can be quite relieving and rewarding.
What Are The Potential Risks?
Although it is becoming more and more popular, skin fasting has some possible disadvantages. For one, those with dry or damaged skin may experience discomfort and dryness if they neglect their moisturizers.
Skipping sunscreen and exposing skin to sun rays is never a good idea. This can exacerbate hyperpigmentation and hasten aging. Additionally, discontinuing active ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid suddenly could make acne worse before it gets better if you have acne-prone skin.
Is It Good For You?
Note that, skin fasting is not a universal solution to skin issues. But, you will still get clarity which is better for your skin and skincare rituals. If your current skincare habits seem daunting or confusing, 'stopping right there' might reveal what the skin is asking for. Ultimately, your aim should be to have a personalized approach and not follow the hype!
