Glow Gimmicks: 5 Skincare Myths You Should Stop Believing
Slather toothpaste on pimples. Skip sunscreen when its cloudy. Everyone has some skincare advice to offer, right? And sometimes we end up falling for some tips that sound good but end up worsening the skin situation. The world of skincare often includes myths that are followed without a reality check. In short, the common skincare fabrications that have been passed around for decades can do harm than heal!
We have listed 5 skincare folktales that you can ignore for good!
Never Moisturize Oily Skin
One of the most widespread skin type myths: Don't apply moisturizer if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Why? Because it will add more oiliness to the face and make matters worse.
In reality, oily skin needs hydration. And when the skin is deprived of moisture, it ends up producing more oil, which leads to breakouts and clogged pores. The key is to select an oil-free, lightweight, and non-comedogenic moisturizer that unclogs the skin!
Exfoliate Everyday
Yes, exfoliation works wonders for sloughing off the dead skin cells, unclogging pores, and bringing in brightness to lacklustre skin. But, overdoing it is never good. The more you exfoliate with potent acids or physical scrubs damage the skin shield. The result? Redness, rashes, and increased sensitivity.
If you exfoliate more than 3-4 times a week, particularly with AHAs. You are hurting your skin. Follow a soothing, consistent routine to get the best results!
Pores Open And Close
Since pores do not have any muscles, they can't open and close on their own! Open pores essentially mean larger pores that appear enlarged due to excess oil and clogged debris. Warm water or steam will help loosen up the pores and clean them effectively.
Similarly, toner or cold water compression will temporarily reduce their appearance but won't close them. The ideal way to deal with pores is to effectively cleanse and exfoliate. It will keep the pores dirt-free and less noticeable!
Sunscreen At The Outdoors Only
Sunscreen is a daily necessity, not just for beach days. Through windows and clouds, ultraviolet (UV) rays-particularly UVA rays-can enter your body, silently speeding up the aging process of your skin and raising your risk of developing skin cancer.
Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater safeguards against the long-term impacts of UV exposure, regardless of whether you're indoors or it's cloudy. Your skin becomes vulnerable if you skip sunscreen on "non-sunny" days!
Burn Or Tingle Means Effective
Just a tingle may appear like the result of potency, but in actual cases, your skin is seeking help! If you are using a solution that is meant to result in a mild reaction, but stinging or burning generally indicates irritation.
Mostly, those with sensitive skin experience such skin discomfort. Note that no effective skincare will hurt your skin. In case a product results in discomfort, it may be too harsh or not compatible with your skin. Discomfort is never a sign of goodness, it is a red flag! Simply put, aim for healing the skin and not hurting it!
