Role Of Astaxanthin In Skin Care

Astaxanthin has a free radical scavenging ability that helps in protecting the body against lipids that increase LDL-cholesterol and oxidative damage. The carotenoid also strengthens cells, their membranes and tissues.
An algae called Haematococcus contains astaxanthin and is the main source of food for marine animals like shrimp, salmon, crabs, and lobster. Every dry kilogram of the algae contains nearly 30g of astaxanthin. With millions of free radicals attacking skin leading to fine lines, wrinkles and dry skin, the red pigment is much needed. It helps in fighting back these free radicals and prevent the breaking down of the cell structures.
