Myths vs Facts: Lice Only Grow On Clean Hair
Lice, those tiny, pesky creatures that infest the scalp and cause itching, are a common problem, especially among school-going children. I still remember when I came home from school - bringing along these pesky insects.
My mother, without wasting a minute, took to my scalp. 8 hours later, I was lice-free and that was the day I realised how messy lice can be.

One of the prevailing myths about lice is that they only thrive in clean hair - it's like a back-handed compliment if you can see it like that. But is it true? Are you suffering from lice simply because you keep your scalp clean?
Myth 1: Lice Only Grow On Clean Hair
Fact: Well, how do we put this? Lice believe in equality guys, and they don't discriminate. Whether it is a clean scalp or an oily one that's not touched water in two weeks, lice can and WILL infest any hair type.
Lice don't care if your hair is freshly washed or if you've skipped a shower. What they are interested in is the blood they get from your scalp. So, whether you have squeaky-clean locks or a bit of oiliness - it makes no difference to these little bugs.

Myth 2: Lice Prefer Clean Hair
Fact: Actually, this myth might stem from the fact that lice eggs (nits) can be easier to spot in clean hair. However, lice themselves are perfectly 'content' in any type of hair.
Whether your hair is freshly washed or unwashed, lice will find their way into it. The real problem is the physical structure of the hair strand and how warm your scalp is, which gives lice a cosy home.

How To Prevent Lice Infestation?
Here is what you can do to prevent lice:
- Regular hair checks: Perform routine scalp checks on your child, especially if there's a lice outbreak at school. Catching lice early can make treatment easier.
- Avoid sharing personal items: Lice can spread through personal items like combs, hats, and headphones. Discourage sharing these items.
- Use preventative products: There are shampoos and sprays available that can get rid of lice.

On A Final Note...
The myth that lice only grow on clean hair is just that- a myth. So, if you or your child ever encounter these unwelcome visitors, remember, it is not a reflection of your hygiene.
It is simply an unfortunate encounter with a common problem that can happen to anyone.
