Worst Things For Your Hair

By Tara Hari

You might think that hair care is very simple and does not take much effort. But what most people fail to realise is that, a number of your hair care practices might actually be doing more harm than good to your hair. For example, for the longest time, I thought that tying my hair tightly will help them growing thick and long, as this is what my grandmother taught me. But I soon came to realise that tying your hair tightly will damage the hair follicles and cause damage to your hair and might even result in hair fall.

Similarly, there are a number of hair care practices and techniques that you might think is beneficial to your hair, but might actually be detrimental to it. Our hair is very delicate and goes through enough damage from pollution and the environment, without us trying to make things even worse in our quest for beauty. You might be doing severe damage to your hair without even realising it. In this article, we look at some of the worst things that you do to your hair.

Avoiding Regular Haircuts

Avoiding Regular Haircuts

If you are trying to grow your hair out, get trims instead of haircuts. Otherwise, you will be left with a lot of split ends and hair that looks overgrown and untidy.

Regular Washing

Regular Washing

Washing your hair regularly does not mean that your hair have to be washed every day. Daily washing has been proven to strip away too much of your natural scalp oil. This leaves your hair dry, brittle and susceptible to breakage.

Over Conditioning

Over Conditioning

Excessive conditioning of your hair, regardless of how dry it is, causes build up on your hair. It also leaves a residue that makes hair appear dull and lifeless.

Conditioning Scalp

Conditioning Scalp

A large number of people make the mistake of applying conditioner to the scalp, instead of along the length of the hair. This damages the hair and can even cause hair fall.

Overheating Hair

If you regularly use heating products on your hair, you will leave your strands frizzy or even, in extreme cases, fried. Protect your cuticles by using specifically engineered products.

Avoid Metal-Bristle Brushes

Avoid Metal-Bristle Brushes

Make sure to chuck any brushes that have metal paddles or bristles. This is because they will heat up as you blow dry or use other heating products. This results in the singeing of your fragile locks.

Fighting Natural Texture

Fighting Natural Texture

Stop straightening curly hair or trying to curl your straight locks regularly. They will never look as good as your natural hair texture does.

Wrong Styling Products

Loading up on the wrong type of styling products will leave your locks frizzy or limp. Start using the products designed for your specific hair type for better results.

Measure Hair Products

Measure Hair Products

Just because a certain product works for your hair does not mean you have to load up on it. Too much of any product will leave your hair looking greasy and limp.

Improper Elastic Bands

Improper Elastic Bands

Do not just use any elastic to tie your hair, like rubber bands. They will snag in your hair and cause breakage when your try to remove them.

Outdated Style

Outdated Style

Stop getting the same haircut over and over again. New hair styles are getting invented all the time, and unless you do not try new things, you will never know what will look most flattering to you.

Too Much Brushing

Too Much Brushing

The old myth about brushing your hair one hundred times is just that, a myth. Too much brushing will leave your hair prone to breakage.

Not Brushing At All

Not Brushing At All

Some people take the less brushing to another level by not brushing their hair at all, all day. Brushing your hair once or twice a day will stimulate the scalp, distribute oil down your hair and leave it untangled.

Brushing Wet Hair

Brushing wet hair is the best way to end up with considerably less hair than you started with. If you absolutely must brush wet hair, use a wide-toothed comb.

After applying products to the scalp, make sure you wash it all off in the shower so nothing remains to clog the hair follicles and cause damage to your locks.
