Vastu means "dwelling" and Shastra means "science. Feng means "air" and Shui means "water. Vastu and Feng Shui belong to the same category of disciplines that are associated with home and its improvement. Hence naturally they are compared with each other and widely debated everywhere. Some principles are so contradicting that people get thoroughly confused about what is to be followed ultimately. Vaastu and Feng Shui are similar and different at the same time."

Similarities

1. They are both archaic disciplines that draw on the vintage knowledge to enhance the wellbeing of the house and its family members.
2. They both require serious inquiry into the system and one needs years of practice before he becomes adept in it.
3. Both sciences believe in balancing of the energies.
4. Water and earth are the most important elements that are studied to enhance prosperity.
5. Both believe in basic cleanliness and clutter free home as this will send in energies that impact positively the growth and development of fortunes.
6. They are both intangible and intractable. They belong to the spiritual realm that can't be felt with senses but understood with knowledge.
7. Both depend on energy flows called Chi or Prana to organise the home.
8. They both offer excellent remedies to improve the luck and look of the house and management of the spaces.

Differences

1. According to Vastu, the 5 basic natural elements are earth, water, fire, air and ether But for Feng Shui, the elements are wood, fire, earth, metal and water.
2. Vastu aligns itself very well with the concepts of the philosophy of the Vedas, Yoga, Ayurveda and astrology. But Feng Shui concurs with whatever has been propounded in the yellow emperor's book of traditional Chinese medicine and astrology.
3. Vastu Shastra is an Indian science whereas Feng Shui originated in China.
4. Vastu Shastra is an ancient system that has been there since 6,000 BC while Feng Shui has been there since 960 BC.
5. Vastu Shastra is purely scientific whereas Feng Shui relies on geographical conditions.
6. While Vastu states that the North direction augurs well for prosperity and finances, Feng Shui considers it to be good or bad depending on the combination of form and energy.
7. According to Vaastu, kitchens must not be planned under or above the pooja room, bathroom and bedroom. Black colour is inauspicious for the Kitchen, We can use bright colours instead. Feng Shui does not advice having a bathroom above the kitchen. Instead it should face the entrance door. Warm colours are best chosen for the kitchen as per the Feng Shui adepts.
