According to the Hindu Calendar, Ashada Masam is the fourth month of the year and it usually begins in the month of June and ends in July. This month comes after Chaitra, Vaisakha and Jyestha months and it marks the onset of monsoon. It is also known as Shunya Masam (Null month).

This month is most auspicious in terms of pilgrimage and worshipping in this month gives special benefits. It is said all desires and wishes will get fulfilled this month. However, all auspicious works are prohibited for the upcoming four months till Ekadashi (Devuthani Ekadashi) of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month) arrives.

This year Ashada month has begun on 05 June 2023 and will continue till 03 July 2023. During this time, auspicious ceremonies cannot be organised one needs to stay away from indulging in new work or starting new ventures. Therefore, people refrain from organising a marriage, housewarming, purchasing a new house or vehicle, starting new ventures or Upanayana ceremonies.

Also, during this month newly married people are asked to stay away from each other. Those who are unaware, let us know why it is said and what rituals should be followed by them during this month.

During Ashada Masam, there are some rituals that are strictly followed by newly-married couples, especially in the Telugu states.

  • The couples are not allowed to see each other during this month.
  • If newly married couples stay together they may conceive a girl and they will deliver the child during the Chaitra month.
  • Chaitra month is said to bring difficulties for a newborn and also the mother who may face some difficulties during summer.
  • During this month, the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law also stay separate so that they can reconcile their relationship and sort out the differences.
