How Are Ragas Associated With Seasons And Emotions

Each raga, in order to totally captivate its audience, needs to be sung only at the hour prescribed for this raga. The ragas can be classified further into morning ragas, noon ragas, evening ragas, and ragas for early morning. Ragas not only are limited for rendering to certain times during the day or night but also are restricted for some seasons as well. The ragas like Malharas, Basant and Bahara, if sung in their respective seasons, can surely draw even celestials to come down to listen to these ragas. Ragas also evoke nava rasas or emotions in Carnatic music. Let us observe facts in detail.
Ragas have calming and soothing properties that can soothe a ruffled mind as well. According to an EEG study of Ragas, some ragas like Darbari Kanada, Khamaj and Pooriya can help in destressing you totally. While Raga Malhar soothes your angry flare ups, calms you down if you are excited, and stabilises you from within. Raga Dwijavanti is known to calm the mind according to an EEG study of Ragas and its impact on Brainwaves published in ijirset.com.
The Ragas That Evoke Nava Rasas Or Emotions In Carnatic Music
Raga Kamavardhini, may let us feel that it is a raga that evokes sensuality but in fact it inspires devotion. Kharaharapriya evokes Karuna as well as Bhakti rasa. It presents the universal emotions of compassion and devotion in their most pleasing form. Hamsadhvani and mohana ragas represent Veera rasa and add a happy and boisterous feel to the songs sung in these ragas.
Vakra or varjya ragas like kamaach, kambhoji, and hindola, allow for a deeply melodious rendering with a wide scope to explore all the facets of the raga.. Certain ragas like saaveri elevate you to spiritual heights and allow you to savour the brahmanandam that comes as a result. Sarvakalika ragas are ragas for any time and any day. Always a concert concludes with a song set to Madhyamavati raga as it has the ability to placate God and counters any error that might have been made during the time of the concert.

Associations Of Ragas With Seasons In Hindustani Music
Hindustani music incorporates the concept of seasons into its musical ethos. There are ragas for all reasons and there are more sagas for all seasons in Hindustani music. Seasonal ragas can be performed at any time during the day or night during that season. Raga Deepak is strictly meant for scorching summers. When Deepak raga used to be sung, lights were believed to be lit on their own. Miyan ki malhar is strictly meant for the monsoons. This raga, when sung by a stalwart like Tansen in Akbars court, used to induce a shower of rains immediately.
While Malkauns brought out the essence of Autumn in its notes, the Winter chills came alive in their freezing best in the rendition of Bhairav. Spring is very compatible with the raga of Hindola which provides fresh and lively melodies to evoke the springtime within us. Raga Sri is an evening raga that suggests dignity and grace.
Ragas are personified into raag and raaginis, the male and female counterparts. There is a belief that Todi is the Raagini or wife of Raga Malkauns, which is the husband.
